John Kelly Promises to Protect Our Grid
This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Last year, Congress charged the Department of Homeland Security with developing a strategy for securing our vulnerable electric grid against all hazards, including sabotage, cyberwarfare and electromagnetic pulses.
The necessity for such a plan was underscored when the Russians hacked into – and temporarily took down – parts of Ukraine’s grid for the second time in recent years. The particular vulnerabilities Russia exploited could be a dress rehearsal for what it – or others – might do to us in the future.
The man tasked with protecting against such a potentially catastrophic assault here is Homeland Security Secretary-designate John Kelly. Thankfully, Gen. Kelly testified during his confirmation hearing this week that he takes this responsibility seriously – a most refreshing change from his predecessor, Jeh Johnson, and the rest of the Obama administration leadership.
The question now is: Will such corrective action materialize in time?
