U.S. Unilateral Disarmament
This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. The 20th anniversary of the summit Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev had in Reykjavik, Iceland is being marked in a curious way. At the Reagan Library, officials of his administration, prominent foreign figures and others are meeting to promote an idea the former President would never have countenanced. Former Secretaries of State George Shultz and James Baker will be among those calling for the global elimination of all nuclear weapons. While that was a goal President Reagan aspired to in the very long run, during his administration and under present circumstances it is simply impossible. Only one nation might actually rid itself of nuclear arms: The United States of America. Every other nation that has nuclear weapons – or aspires to have them – is building more, not abandoning their arsenals. Ronald Reagan rejected U.S. unilateral disarmament, and so should we.
