Today in South Korea, President Obama enthused again about his vision of a world without nuclear weapons. He declared that, since he was convinced we had more of them than we need, he is going to reduce our arsenal – according to some accounts to one the size of Pakistan’s.
Mr. Obama suggested that he would get the Russians to do the same. But, if not, his subordinates are signaling that he is prepared to disarm us unilaterally.
Ironically, Mr. Obama also commended his South Korean hosts for developing nuclear power, but not nuclear weapons. Evidently, he has no clue that’s because they have relied on our nuclear umbrella. If we close it, we better expect that such allies will get their own – leading to a world with more nuclear powers, not none.

In 2010, President Obama signed a deal with the Russians making deep cuts in U.S. nuclear forces.
Senators who had to approve this deal, known as the New START Treaty, were skeptical about its advisability – worrying that, its one-sided and unverifiable terms would not require the Russians to eliminate any of their weapons, only us.
The Senate’s approval ultimately depended on Mr. Obama promising to upgrade what would remain of America’s deterrent forces. Now, he is walking away from that pledge. Worse yet, he has ordered the Pentagon to prepare plans for a unilateral eighty percent reduction in our obsolescing and much-diminished nuclear arsenal.
Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio wants to hold President Obama accountable for disarming us in an increasingly dangerous world. A presidential campaign is the perfect time to do it.

Blind Ideology

Last week, we learned that President Obama is actively considering reducing the U.S. nuclear arsenal to as few as 300 weapons.
This week, Vladimir Putin, the rabidly anti-American autocrat who runs Russia, announced that he plans to modernize his country’s nuclear arsenal with 400 new intercontinental-range ballistic missiles.
Unfortunately, the Russians are not the only ones ignoring Mr. Obama’s bid to rid the world of nuclear arms. China, Pakistan, North Korea and Iran are among those hostile to us who are also building up their arsenals.
Under these circumstances, it is downright reckless to be pursuing what amounts to unilateral U.S. disarmament. Thirty-four Members of Congress have warned Mr. Obama that such decisions must be made on the basis not of “blind ideology,” but what will deter attack against this country. Amen.

Politics of Unilateral Disarmament

Is unilaterally disarming America good politics? One would think the answer is a no-brainer. But some self-described conservatives seem to think that running to the left of Barack Obama is a responsible national security strategy, sound economically and a winning political platform.
None of these is true. Eviscerating our military only makes destructive and costly wars more likely. The defense spending cuts now in the works will result by some estimates in a million workers losing their high-paying, high-skilled jobs – to say nothing of probably several hundred thousand more who will be forced out of uniform and out of the government workforce.
Fortunately, all three of the Republican presidential candidates who have actually won to date embrace Ronald Reagan’s philosophy of “peace through strength.” The American people deserve – and must accept – nothing less.

One of President Obama’s most controversial and dangerous policies is the least debated by our country; he wants to rid the world of nuclear weapons. What should alarm every American is that Mr. Obama thinks the way to achieve this ambitious goal is to allow the aging U.S. deterrent to wither away. He refuses to allow true modernization of our arsenal or realistic testing, necessary to ensure our obsolescent weapons remain safe, reliable and effective.
The trouble is that no other nuclear power, actual or incipient, is abandoning its weapons programs, not one. In fact, everyone else is building up their nuclear arsenals.
Communist China has even constructed a three thousand mile underground tunnel to conceal its growing nuclear missile force.
Unilateral U.S. disarmament will make the world more dangerous, not less.

The 20th anniversary of the summit Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev had in Reykjavik, Iceland is being marked in a curious way. At the Reagan Library, officials of his administration, prominent foreign figures and others are meeting to promote an idea the former President would never have countenanced.
Former Secretaries of State George Shultz and James Baker will be among those calling for the global elimination of all nuclear weapons. While that was a goal President Reagan aspired to in the very long run, during his administration and under present circumstances it is simply impossible.
Only one nation might actually rid itself of nuclear arms: The United States of America. Every other nation that has nuclear weapons – or aspires to have them – is building more, not abandoning their arsenals.
Ronald Reagan rejected U.S. unilateral disarmament, and so should we.
