Snowden's Friends, America's Enemies

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.Whether Edward Snowden is a traitor seems to have been settled. The former National Security Agency contractor who divulged highly classified information about two intelligence collection programs, then fled to the Communist Chinese territory of Hong Kong, has now left there. At this point, it is not clear what other top-secret data he may have shared with his Chinese hosts before heading to Moscow. Or whether he has also betrayed his country to Russian intelligence while transiting through Moscow’s airport. Or where his final destination will be – perhaps Venezuela or Ecuador. What is clear from the company Snowden is keeping among America’s enemies is that he is, indeed, a traitor. And he should be treated as such – by our government and by any true friends we still have around the world. This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. Learn more at SecureFreedom.org.

Citizen of the World?

There is something deeply disturbing about the fact that President Obama chose a foreign venue to announce that he is going to eliminate one-third of what's left of America's aging nuclear arsenal. It was almost a throw-away applause line in his speech yesterday on the eastern side of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz observed last night that Mr. Obama was able to make his address there thanks to the nuclear deterrent that Ronald Reagan modernized and used to back up his strategy for taking down the Soviet Union - and the monstrous wall that long divided Germany's capital.
Mr. Obama may fancy himself a "citizen of the world." But he is putting citizens of this constitutional republic at risk with his disastrous hollowing out of our national security capabilities.

Nuclear Delusions

In Berlin today, President Obama will invite Russia once again to join him in what he likes to call "ridding the world of nuclear weapons." This is simply a non-starter since Vladimir Putin is actually aggressively building up Russia's nuclear arsenal, not eliminating it.
Mr. Obama is, consequently, deceptively engaging in what amounts to the unilateral disarmament of the United States. Not only is he planning to reduce the number of American nuclear weapons to the lowest levels in decades, with or without the Russians.
Worse yet, he is refusing to modernize what is left of our nuclear stockpile and its associated delivery systems, undermining its credibility and effectiveness. Far from a world without nuclear weapons, such U.S. behavior is certain to encourage allies, as well as enemies, to proliferate them further.

Nasty Space Weather

It's often said that "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." That's especially true of "space weather" caused by intense solar flaring like that occurring this year.
Such a flares could expose the earth to devastatingly intense bursts of energy known as electromagnetic pulse, or EMP. A recent study by Lloyds of London concluded that 20 to 40 million Americans could lose power for between 16 days and 2 years. The costs of remediation could run as high as $2 trillion, and many of us would die.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Congressman Trent Franks are among those kicking off today a concerted effort to end America's vulnerability to EMP threats. They are promoting the SHIELD Act and its requires your strong support.

Immoderate Rohani

Iran has a new president and the winner is being universally described as a "moderate." Hassan Rohani may be less obviously extreme in his immoderation than his rivals. But he is not a man with whom we can do business.
For starters, Rohani couldn't have been on the ballot without the approval of the clerics who actually run Iran. They are cunning enough to have calculated that he will be completely loyal to the Supreme Leader's malevolent policies at home and abroad, yet able to induce the West to ease sanctions or otherwise eliminate the remaining impediments to Tehran's now-nearly-complete nuclear weapons program.
If the United States and other Western powers fall for the mullahs' gambit, we will not only confront in short order a nuclear Iran. We will have enabled it.

R2P in Syria

The White House says the Syrian government breached President Obama's "redlines" after all by using chemical weapons.
So, having unilaterally abandoned Iraq and Afghanistan in the name of ending wars, Mr. Obama is unilaterally getting us into a new one - a civil war, no less - by providing "military assistance" to Syria's al Qaeda-dominated "rebels."
Welcome to the "responsibility to protect" - a notion embraced by some on Team Obama, like Samantha Power, the president's controversial nominee to be our next UN ambassador. She and other promoters of R2P, as it's known, believe military force should be used, but only where we have no interests.
Tragically, applying it here will embroil us in a wider war doomed to make make Mr. Obama's previous R2P debacle in Benghazi and elsewhere in Libya pale by comparison.
