Chechens in Boston

The effort to discover and neutralize the perpetrators of the latest Boston massacre has entered a highly dramatic - and dynamic - phase. One suspect has been killed in a gunfight in Watertown, Massachusetts. Another is, as I speak, the subject of an intense manhunt there.
Police have identified the two as brothers from the Russian province of Chechnya, whose Muslim-population has been radicalized in the course of Vladimir Putin's protracted repression there. We'll soon know if they're responsible for this attack, and - if so - whether they acted alone.
Until then, speculation has become a national pastime - but not a very productive one. This much is clear, though: The perpetrators of this attack are not the only ones who wish us harm. Every American must now become part of vigilantly defending our country against them.

No to Perez

Today, the Senate will hold a hearing on the nomination of Thomas Perez to be the next Secretary of Labor. He is perhaps the most controversial of President Obama's nominees to Cabinet positions in his second administration - and that is saying something in light of the competition for that dubious distinction.
Since 2009, Perez has been as senior Justice Department official and his record there and in previous roles paints a picture of a radical leftist who, for example, thinks white people do not have civil rights that deserve to be protected in the same way as minorities.
The Labor Department must not be run by someone with such outrageous and anti-constitutional views. Check out a new video at www.SecureFreedom.org and urge your Senators to reject Tom Perez.

Facing Evil

Explosive-packed pressure cookers full of nails and ball bearings in Boston. An envelope laced with a deadly toxin called Ricin intercepted on its way to a Senator's office in Washington. These attacks may have nothing in common except this:
There is evil in the world and we are in its crosshairs. Our enemies include jihadists who use terror to impose Islam's supremacist shariah code to psychopaths who simply want to kill and maim.
Evil requires the good, the innocent and the peaceable to rouse themselves to be vigilant, courageous, strong and engaged in their common defense. We must put aside the illusion that if only we leave the evil alone, they will do the same to us. It has never been true in the past and it won't be in the future.

Boston Massacre

Yesterday's terrorist attack in Boston was a horrifying reminder that the world has people in it who are determined to kill Americans, if possible in large numbers. While many were wounded in the attack - some grievously, a miraculously small number were killed. This time.
Unfortunately, that may not be the case the next time around. Al Qaeda has threatened "earth-shaking" attacks here this summer. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps tried one in Washington two years ago. Hamas, Hezbollah and other groups are reportedly poised to do the same. Then there are those said to be lone wolves.
Too many Americans have grown complacent. They are persuaded such threats have receded, that we can now safely ignore them and diminish our countervailing capabilities. The bloody mayhem inflicted in Boston yesterday proves otherwise.

Regrettably, President Obama's new national security cabinet officers are fulfilling their critics' harsh predictions. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has indicated that more cuts in defense spending are in prospect and initiated a series of concessions to the North Koreans in the face of their continuing belligerence.
Not to be outdone, Secretary of State John Kerry has been signaling to the Chinese and their puppets in North Korea that the United States is a paper tiger. Mr. Kerry announced that President Obama is prepared to negotiate bilaterally with the North and to undo U.S. missile defense deployments if only Pyongyang will promise us again to eliminate its nuclear program.
Foes and friends alike are responding to this evidence of our waning power in the Pacific. No good will come of that perception.

Reality Check

For weeks, we have been told that North Korea does not have the ability to conduct a nuclear attack on the United States - even though it keeps claiming that's its intent. Yesterday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel repeated that claim in congressional testimony.
This assurance, however, is misleadingly based on just one of the ways in which such a nuclear strike could be mounted on us. But what if the North Koreans don't have in mind using a long-range, nuclear-armed missile launched from their own soil? It turns out, if other options are considered, a devastating attack is possible right now.
Weapons smuggled across our porous borders, ship-borne short-range missiles and possibly even the North's orbiting satellite may constitute present dangers. Official deceit about that reality provides false comfort, probably dangerously so.
