Obama's Reckless Disarmament

In the past, presidents of both parties have slashed the defense budget, making it a bill-payer for domestic spending priorities.  The resulting hollowing out of our military left it unprepared for the otherwise avoidable wars invited by our weakness.
We were assured that such "peace dividends" were possible thanks to tranquil global conditions.  By contrast, the budget unveiled by President Obama yesterday - with its continuing, huge cuts to military preparedness, modernization, training and power projection capabilities - comes at a moment when the U.S. is in one war in Afghanistan, another is being threatened by the North Koreans and more dangers are emerging by the day.
It has always been irresponsible to deny our armed forces the steady and robust investment the national security requires. Doing so under present circumstances is downright reckless.

Immigration Fraud

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Republicans are being urged by four of their senators, prominent partisans and special interests to consign their party to permanent minority status.  Oh, that's not the stated purpose of so-called "comprehensive immigration reform."  But it would be the practical - and predictable - effect.
There are, of course, many other problems with this initiative, including that it immediately rewards with legal status people who have violated our laws - at enormous cost.
But, as Mark Krikorian recently observed, a similar effort was deliberately mounted by the Left in Britain two decades ago to change the demographics and, for almost a generation, the politics of that country. Neither the United States as a whole nor the GOP will benefit from repeating this error, no matter how many times Republicans are told a new amnesty will earn Hispanic votes.

Missing Maggie

The death of Margaret Thatcher yesterday marks the passing of a generation of leaders who literally remade their world.  The former British prime minister was universally known as the "Iron Lady" for her steadfast commitment to anti-communist and free-market principles.
At the height of the Cold War, Lady Thatcher worked closely with Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan not to contain but to roll-back Soviet communism and to undermine the USSR.  Together they helped set free many millions of people without firing a shot.
Margaret Thatcher understood and practiced the philosophy Mr. Reagan called "peace through strength."  In particular, she supported his visionary efforts to restore America's nuclear deterrent and build missile defenses.  In a world becoming more dangerous by the day, such leadership is needed more than ever.

And that is pretty much all we know for sure about an incident that has – let’s face it – been subjected to the most comprehensive, and successful, cover-up in modern political history.
Now, seven hundred heroic special operations veterans have written an open letter to Congress calling for the creation of a new investigative committee to learn the truth. They want to know, in particular, why warriors like them weren’t allowed to aid our countrymen in their hour of need.

Moscow Rules

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
In the midst of escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula, the United States has sensibly been beefing up its missile defenses in the region lest North Korea's erratic regime decide to launch missiles at things we care about.
Meanwhile, the Russians recently sent a long-range, nuclear-capable Backfire bomber to simulate strikes on two of our anti-missile assets in the region.  This is but the latest in a series of such provocative Russian flights in recent months against U.S. targets, overseas and here at home.
The Obama administration's response is pretty troubling, too.  Its feckless Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, is busy announcing still more cuts in our national security capabilities and launching new talks with Russia about curbing our missile defenses.  Rewarding their bad behavior ensures there will be more of it.

Secure Borders First

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The hype behind so-called Comprehensive Immigration Reform continues to mount.  Much of it is fueled by speculation about what eight Senators - four Democrats and four Republicans - are cooking up behind closed doors.
A chilling insight was afforded over the weekend, however, by one of those Democratic Senators, Chuck Schumer of New York.  He declared that the group's priority would be legalization first, border security second.  In other words, the millions of aliens already unlawfully here would be put on the "path to citizenship" immediately -- and long before the path for more to come to America illegally is shut down.
Given this prospect, there has reportedly been of late a 500 percent increase in unlawful border crossings.  We must have secure borders before more incentives are offered to come to this country.
