Korean War 2.0

The ever-present danger of conflict on the Korean peninsula may be growing and renewed violence there may not be limited to that region.
Under its new leader, Kim Jong-Un, North Korea has lately  warned of its intention to destroy U.S. forces in Japan and Guam and strike the American homeland. The United States has just signed an agreement with South Korea affirming a shared intention to retaliate harshly for any such attack.
The possibilities of a renewed war in Korea is a reminder of how quickly our priorities can change and that our perceived weakness can be provocative.  Regrettably, due to sustained cuts in defense spending and the resulting hollowing out of our military, we may be perceived as ill-equipped to deter such aggression, or contend with the repercussions should it occur.

An Unwarranted Apology

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
It's an indictment of President Obama's Mideast trip last week that its most tangible result was an apology that was unwarranted and will likely prove counterproductive.
Mr. Obama had pressed Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu to apologize to the President's favorite foreign leader, Turkey's Recep Erdogan.  This required Mr. Netanyahu to say he was sorry about the loss of life caused two years ago when Erdogan deliberately provoked a crisis by aiding Hamas, a terrorist group sworn to destroy the Jewish State.
Worse yet, the apology followed Islamist Erdogan's recent denunciation of Zionism as a "crime against humanity." He is also providing life-support to a regime in Iran that wants to "wipe Israel off the map."  No good can come from appeasing such a foe -  either for Israel or for us.

The World Through Palestinian Eyes

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
This week, President Obama has expressed an enthusiasm for the Jewish State not evident in his first term.  If authentic, what might be called a conversion on the road to Jerusalem would be most welcome.
Yet, a certain cynicism about the sincerity of Mr. Obama's new-found embrace of Israel seems warranted.  Notably, he engaged in a highly manipulative effort yesterday to foment pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu to make territorial and other concessions by speaking over his head to a carefully selected group of Israeli students.
The President urged them to "look at the world through [the] eyes" of their Palestinian counterparts.  This appeal is seductive, but ignores a show-stopping reality:  Those Palestinian kids have been indoctrinated from birth to see the only acceptable solution as a Middle East without Israel.

Two States One State

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
During a meeting with Palestinian Mahmoud Abbas today, President Obama promised to make a redoubled effort to give his people their own state.  But why?
Abbas is a man whose presidency of something called the Palestinian Authority expired over four years ago.  He exercises no control over the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip which is run by the terrorist organization, Hamas.  And the majority of Palestinians - even those who are not, at least for the moment, openly supportive of Hamas - seek the destruction of Israel.
Worst of all, President Obama insists Israel must surrender land essential to its security to such people.  This is not a formula for a two-state solution, but for one without Israel.  It must be rejected  not only by Israelis, but by all Americans who stand with them.

Iraqi Freedom Plus 10

Ten years ago today President George W. Bush launched the military assault that liberated Iraq. In short order, a U.S.-led coalition achieved its central purpose of eliminating the threat posed by the terrorism sponsoring  Saddam Hussein, and thereby giving the Iraqi people a chance for a better government and future.
There's much to find fault with in terms of what followed the invasion of Iraq. Missteps with respect to nation building, which however well-intentioned, gave rise to an unwanted and undesirable US occupation at huge cost to our military personnel and tax payers, and to Iraqis.
That said, it was a strategic imperative to remove Saddam from power before the sanctions regime that held him in check completely unraveled. Ten years on Americans should take pride in having risen to that challenge.

Obama's Missile Defense Gap

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Last week, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that the Obama administration had decided to upgrade U.S. missile defenses in the face of a growing threat from the increasingly truculent regime in North Korea. That seems like the least we can do given Pyongyang's declaration that it is prepared to launch a nuclear attack against us.
Does Team Obama's apparent reversal of its past efforts to diminish our defenses actually represent much of an improvement? The 14 additional West Coast interceptor missiles won't come on line until 2017.  It will probably take even longer to put some on the East Coast.  And the administration's own plan for defending us from Europe has been scotched - to the Russians' delight.
Thirty years ago this week, Ronald Reagan recognized we need effective missile defenses. Does President Obama?
