See No Budget

Perhaps it's what you should expect when you entrust the presidency to someone who has never managed anything. Still, after four years in the White House, it is astounding that President Obama has failed to produce a budget to guide the government for the next fiscal year - and that he won't do so until April.
True, Mr. Obama's budgets have been pretty irrelevant in the past, even when they have been submitted on time.
Still, it's evidence of incompetent leadership, at best, and actual malfeasance, at worst, that this President does not feel a duty to provide his blueprint for governing. It's no way to run a railroad - let alone the U.S. government, even if the Senate actually produces a budget for the first time in years and Congress ultimately fills the void.

The Stench of Defeat

In recent days, the stench of U.S. defeat has been palpable in Afghanistan. That country's president - and America's putative ally, Hamid Karzai, has become increasingly high-handed with our servicemen and women who are serving, and in some cases dying, to protect his government from the Taliban.
For example, Karzai has demanded that U.S. personnel stop conducting night raids that have proven effective in identifying and taking down enemy leaders. He's barred our special forces from operating at all in an increasingly contested province near Kabul. And Karzai went out of his way to dis the new Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, during a meeting there last week.
Unfortunately, unless we change Afghan calculations, we'll see more of this behavior - and more of our troops needlessly killed by Afghans inspired by it.

Obama's Litmus Test

President Obama seems to have a worrisome litmus test for staffing his new administration. The recently installed Secretaries of State and Defense, the White House Chief of Staff and the CIA Director all have in common an eagerness to embrace our Islamist foes.
Now, Mr. Obama reportedly will appoint as his Secretary of Labor someone who literally did that in October 2011. While serving as one of the Justice Department's top officials, Perez jumped onto a stage to physically hug Mohamed Magid, the president of the largest Muslim Brotherhood front in the United States.
Last June, five Members of Congress asked the Inspector General of the Justice Department to investigate Magid's role in aligning U.S. policy with the Brotherhood's preferences. He refused. The Senate must establish the truth before confirming Tom Perez.

Abu Ghaith

We just learned of a small, but potentially significant, victory in the war against our jihadist enemies. Unfortunately, the full benefits of that victory may be lost due to the Obama administration's ideologically driven handling of Osama bin Laden's son-in-law.
Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was the chief propagandist for al Qaeda and a member of its management council. He would know a lot about the organization's workings, its personnel and, not least, its ties to Iran where Abu Ghaith was given safe haven for a decade.
By refusing to take him to Guantanamo Bay, to interrogate him there and subject him to military tribunal rather than civil trial in New York, Team Obama may have forfeited the chance to elicit such information and make the most of this small - and possibly fleeting victory.

North Korea's Threat

Americans awoke today to a warning from North Korean that more UN sanctions would result in a preemptive nuclear strike on the United States.
North Korea is, of course, a poor and backwards nation. Could it be capable of a devastating attack on what we continue to be told is the world's only superpower? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. Pyongyang has nuclear weapons, some of which may be small enough to put aboard a ballistic missile. It has, at a minimum, short-range missiles that could be employed to attack us if brought close to our shores aboard a tramp steamer.
And using such capabilities to launch an electro-magnetic pulse attack could devastate this country's electrical grid and society. This is no time for President Obama to cut our nuclear deterrent and our missile defenses.

After Chavez

The death yesterday of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez should be a cause of celebration for freedom-loving people throughout the Western hemisphere and around the world. But most especially, those in Venezuela ought to be popping corks since they now may have, with our help, the chance to begin undoing the damage done to their country by Chavez over his decade-long misrule.
One might describe what that has entailed as the "fundamental transformation" of Venezuela from a longstanding pro-Western free-market democracy to a socialist kleptocracy aligned with every bad actor on the planet and the sponsor of virulent anti-Americanism throughout the hemisphere.
The Obama administration - which was appallingly friendly towards Chavez - needs now to ensure that a constitutional succession takes place in Venezuela, thereby preventing a Cuban puppet and Chavez's chosen successor from taking over.
