Drone Strikes on Turncoats

Eleven U.S. senators threatened to block John Brennan's appointment as CIA director to extract a legal justification for the Obama administration's use of drone attacks in foreign countries to kill senior leaders of al Qaeda and associated groups who happen to be American citizens.
A Justice Department memo released yesterday helps allay legitimate concerns about the potential abuse of such a practice.  These include reasonable requirements that the targeted individual poses an imminent threat of violent attack and that capturing him is "infeasible."
In the real world, we must be able quickly to neutralize such threats, even if traitorous Americans are responsible for them.  There are many reasons for the Senate to keep John Brennan from politicizing and otherwise undermining the Central Intelligence Agency.  This policy should not be one of them.

Super Blackout

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Advertisers pay millions for the chance to reach a global audience for even a few seconds during the Super Bowl.  The value of the thirty-five minutes in which the New Orleans Superdome was partially blacked-out, however, could be literally priceless.
After all, the resulting, protracted interruption of the most-watched event in the country powerfully conveys the message of our dependence upon electricity.  We shouldn’t need it after the devastating and widespread black-outs caused by Hurricanes Sandy and New Orleans’ own Katrina.  But we still haven’t taken the steps necessary to protect our electrical grid against natural disasters, or crippling man-caused cyberwarfare or electro-magnetic pulse attacks.
Fortunately, the lights came back on eventually last night.  If we act now, we can harden the grid – and ensure they don’t go out for America permanently.

Just Say No to Hagel

Yesterday, Chuck Hagel made one thing abundantly clear: He is unfit to serve as America's next Secretary of Defense.
In eight hours of testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee, he dissembled, stumbled and outright lied about his record, views and policy judgment.  As Senator Jim Inhofe, the Committee's ranking Republican, observed:  The world is much too dangerous a place at the moment to entrust the Pentagon to such a seriously flawed leader.  Virtually every other GOP Senator seems likely to concur.
The question now is whether Senate Democrats will act in the national interest or defer blindly to President Obama.  They'll  be under intense pressure to toe the party line.  But Mr. Obama can come up with a better candidate for Defense Secretary and his partisans in the Senate must insist that he do so.

Hitting the GDP Wall

America's faltering economic recovery just hit a significant speed bump.  If Congress and the President fail to act right away, it will soon hit the proverbial wall.
We learned yesterday that the nation's Gross Domestic Product sharply dropped because defense expenditures associated with U.S. operations in Afghanistan are winding down.  That tenth-of-a-percent downturn occurred after four years of sputtering growth.  Unfortunately, it is but a foretaste of what is coming if another $500 billion is stripped from the Pentagon's budget as part of what is known as "sequestration."

Hagee's Legions

On the eve of tomorrow's Senate hearing on the nomination of Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense, formidable opposition has emerged from an unexpected quarter.  Pastor John Hagee's Christians United for Israel brought hundreds of religious leaders to Washington this week.  They warned Senators against entrusting the Pentagon to a man with Mr. Hagel's deeply problematic record and seriously deficient judgment.
The pastors urged legislators to focus on evidence of the former Senator's support for weakening the United States and Israel, and for engaging, empowering and emboldening their enemies.  And they discounted the nominee's last-minute - and implausible - claims to the contrary.

Hagel's Spin

On Thursday, the Senate Armed Services Committee and the American people will be treated to quite a spectacle:  Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s choice to be the next Secretary of Defense, will be spinning at the RPM of a prima ballerina.  By telling Senators what they want to hear, he hopes to obscure his well-documented public record, blur his serially faulty judgments and disguise the harm both suggest he is prepared to do, if confirmed, to national security.
Will Mr. Hagel’s cynical and contemptuous gambit be rewarded by the Senate, or will it be properly repudiated?
That may depend as much on what your Senators hear from you as the falsehoods they hear from Chuck Hagel.  If you are concerned about his hostility towards Israel and his willingness to disarm us, let them know.
