Worse than Mubarak

A news report from Egypt this morning featured a comment as predictable as it was chilling.  A leader of the Egyptian revolution two years ago declared that his country’s Muslim Brotherhood president, Mohamed Morsi, is “worse than Mubarak.”
With Morsi declaring a state of emergency in three provinces following murderous suppression of weekend rioting, the Egyptians have traded out a secular autocrat for an Islamist tyrant.  And yes, thanks to the Brotherhood’s commitment to imposing totalitarian shariah law, Morsi’s misrule is certain to prove worse than Mubarak’s.
Coming on top of recent revelations of Morsi’s hatred for Israel, it’s becoming impossible to justify unconditional U.S. arms sales and financial assistance to Egypt.  Such actions put us on the side of shariah and its adherents, which is not where America should be.

Women in Combat

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta formally unveiled yesterday the latest of Team Obama’s serial assaults on the U.S. military.  From now on, American women can be eligible for ground combat.  The practical effect of the Panetta decision though may be to force women into the frontlines of America’s future wars.
That’s right.  A previous Pentagon study of this idea – which recommended against its adoption – found it unworkable to let female soldiers and Marines opt out of combat when their male counterparts are denied that right.  Mr. Panetta also can’t say whether his decision would effectively subject America’s young women to the draft.
We’re told women may still be excluded for physical reasons.  But given President Obama’s evident determination to hollow out our armed forces, such natty practical considerations are unlikely to impede him.

Free Britania

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
British Prime Minister David Cameron is offering his countrymen a chance to restore democratic government in the United Kingdom.  If you thought that had been in place since the days of the Magna Carta, think again.
In fact, for years, the lives of Britons have been increasingly dictated by unelected bureaucrats working for the European Union in Brussels.  And increasingly, the Brits are fed up with their high-handedness and unaccountability.
Unfortunately, President Obama doesn’t seem to understand that the United States has a powerful interest in a sovereign and free United Kingdom – one with whom it can enjoy a mutually beneficial and truly “special” strategic relationship.  The truth is the EU has proven to be ever-more-unreliable a partner to us even as it has become ever more autocratic to the people of Europe.

Right to Know

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Hillary Clinton is expected to make her final congressional appearance as Secretary of State tomorrow. She will be testifying about the attack on US forces in Benghazi, Libya last September. Legislators will likely focus on her role in the failure to secure the facility, and to tell the truth about what happened during and after the murder of our ambassador and three others.
Mrs. Clinton must also be asked about who is responsible for devising and executing the policy that gave rise to that disaster, namely the policy of engaging, legitimating, powering, funding, and arming Islamists. Does she now think we should persist in this folly despite its obvious failure and growing costs? The American people have a need to know the answers to such questions. Congress has a duty to ensure they are asked.

Morsi

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The man Barack Obama helped install as president of Egypt is an anti-Semite.  For example, in 2010, Mohamed Morsi referred to Jews as “the descendants of apes and pigs.”  He also declared that they and persist in “fanning the flames of civil strife wherever they were throughout history.”
Unfortunately, Morsi’s reprehensible invitations to genocide are not isolated incidents.  In fact, Jew-hatred and intolerance are central to the Muslim Brotherhood agenda of shariah – the virulently totalitarian doctrine Brothers like Morsi seek to impose worldwide. It is predictable that such hostility will, at some point, translate into violence against Israel.
That being the case, it is madness for the United States to be funding, to say nothing of arming, the Morsi regime in Egypt.  Such madness must not go unchallenged.

Hagel

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
President Obama wants Chuck Hagel as the next Defense Secretary. One reason: the former Nebraska Senator wants to cut even more from the Pentagon budget than Mr. Obama has publicly advocated to date.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff are evidently so alarmed at the impact of the cuts now in prospect that they have issued a written warning to Congress. They said the United States military was reaching the “tipping point” that would produce a “hollow force.”
Civilian control of the U.S. armed forces is an important and time-honored principle in this country. If Senators give Chuck Hagel that control, though, they will assure the hollowing out of our military. History shows that will make the world more dangerous, and make the men and women charged with protecting us ever-less-capable of doing so.
