Hostages

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The world has a very direct way of demonstrating that America is perceived to be so weak that it can be taken on -- even by those who are, in relative terms, infinitely weaker.  One of the most dramatic is hostage-taking.
In 1979, Iranian jihadists displayed their contempt for President Jimmy Carter and the U.S. military he had “hollowed out” by attacking our embassy in Tehran.  As the new Hollywood blockbuster Argo reminds us, our countrymen were allowed to be held hostage there for over a year, underscoring our national impotence.
Yesterday, Americans were again taken hostage – this time by al Qaeda jihadist in Algeria.  It coincided with a dramatic warning by seven top military commanders that pending budget cuts risk creating another “hollow force.”  We truly can’t afford to go there.

Hagel's Flimflam

Confirmation conversion syndrome is a well-known phenomenon in official Washington.  Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s choice to be the next Secretary of Defense, however, seems to have a particularly bad case of the disease.
The former Senator is telling his colleagues that he doesn’t believe practically any of the things the record indicates he has long advocated.  Now he strongly supports Israel -- a country he previously, routinely criticized.  Now he favors sanctions he previously mostly opposed on Iran and doesn’t like terrorist groups he previously wanted to engage.
Expect more of this flimflammery in his upcoming hearing.  The question is:  Will Senators reward it by turning the Pentagon over to a man with well-established and very problematic beliefs just because he is willing to tell them now whatever they want to hear?

What Al Qaeda?

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Not too long ago, President Obama relentlessly campaigned on the proposition that -- thanks to his success as Commander-in-Chief -- "al Qaeda is on the path to defeat."  This claim was never true and was deliberately misleading.
It showed Team Obama's failure to understand the true nature of the threat we face from those Muslims who seek through jihad to impose globally their repressive shariah doctrine.  That group has always included Islamists other than al Qaeda, and their numbers and power have only increased on President Obama's watch.
Now Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta tells us the U.S. has actually been worried for a long time about al Qaeda taking over northern Mali.  If so, it sure was a cynical and well-kept secret from the American people prior to the 2012 election.

Mali

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The war between jihadists and the West has a new front: the West African nation of Mali, where Islamists now control an area roughly the size of France, which formerly colonized the place.
Declaring that al Qaeda-associated elements must not be allowed to establish and operate from new safe-havens, the French have recently started bombing them in northern Mali.  Reportedly, they are being helped by the United States and the UK.
Ironically, this effort to roll-back the territorial gains of shariah-adherent jihadis comes at the same time the French, British and Americans are helping other Islamists to take over Syria. There are even 750 places in France itself that are no-go zones for non-Muslims.
The West must defeat efforts to impose shariah worldwide.  To do so, however, will require clarity, competence and consistency.

Al Quds

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
For years, American presidents have refused to acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.  Even though Jerusalem is, in fact, the seat of government for the Jewish State, successive administrations have pandered to Israel's enemies, who hope to return the city to Arab and Muslim control.
Now, President Obama has chosen as the next director of the CIA a man whose sympathies for this ambition are so great that he actually prefers to call Jerusalem by the name used by those who reject its historic and present Jewishness.  John Brennan calls it "al Quds."
Denying reality is never a sound basis for security policy.  Even worse, Team Obama is inflaming the belief that America no longer stands with Israel, thus inviting a war that will be devastating for our ally,00 and potentially for us.

Iran's Choice for Secretary of Defense

President Obama's choice to be the next Secretary of Defense came in for a lot of criticism even before it was announced since former Senator Chuck Hagel's positions have run the gamut from controversial to extreme and downright reckless.
Hagel has been applauded, however, by the state-controlled media of Iran.  The mullahs' mouthpiece, Press TV, has enthused about Hagel for his vociferously anti-Israel stance.  The Iranian regime must also appreciate his longstanding encouragement of unconditional engagement with Tehran, his opposition to tough sanctions against it and his denunciation of any use of force to prevent Iran from getting the bomb.
There are plenty of other good reasons to oppose the nomination of Chuck Hagel to lead our military at this critical time.  Iran's endorsement of him, though, should be high on the list.
