The Cancer of Chavismo

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
There's a certain irony to the fact that Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez is dying of some form of cancer.  After all, his regime and cult of personality known as Chavismo have been a kind of strategic cancer in Latin America for over a decade.
Chavez has instituted a communist economic program, principally benefiting his cronies, Cuba's Castro brothers and the Chinese.  He has relied on a Cuban-supplied security apparatus, Russian weapons imports, narco-trafficking and virulent anti-Americanism to maintain control at home and expand his influence in the region.
Hugo Chavez's apparently imminent death is an incredibly important opportunity to end this mortal peril to freedom in Latin America.  Will President Obama -- who has said he does not consider Chavez a threat -- miss this chance, and thereby help perpetuate that threat?

Karzai's Visit

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Barack Obama is meeting this week with Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai, who owes his presidency to American military might.  Without it, his country and people would be subject once again to the ruinous misrule of Taliban jihadists.
We can expect to hear little by way of appreciation from Mr. Karzai during his visit to Washington.  Instead, he will demand more money and try to dictate terms for the continued presence of whatever forces the United States might be willing to keep in-country after 2014.
Such arrogance is particularly galling coming as it does on the heels of dozens of attacks by uniformed Afghans on our personnel.  Hamid Karzai should understand that it merely serves to undercut arguments for further American sacrifice in lives and treasure for his corrupt and increasingly unreliable regime.

Al Goreeza

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Let's call it Al-Gorezza.  That would be the new network former Vice President Al Gore is launching with the jihadists’ favorite television outlet: Al Jazeera.
Mr. Gore is pocketing $100 million for selling his failing Current Network to the oil-rich royal family of state of Qutar, which owns Al-Jazeera.  Al-Goreeza will thereby gain access to as many as 40 million homes across the United States.
Thus, a nation increasingly bankrolling the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists obtains huge new means of propagandizing Americans.  This is a critical ingredient in the stealthy form of subversion the Brotherhood calls “civilization jihad.”  For a man who was once a heartbeat away from the presidency to enrich himself by selling out his country in this fashion is not just contemptible.  It is threat to the national security.

Support the Constitution

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
As a new Congress convenes for the first time today, every member will swear the following oath:  “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.”
President Obama will soon reiterate a similar commitment.  Yet, he has shown himself willing to play fast-and-loose with the Constitution.  He has refused to enforce laws he doesn’t like.  He has effectively made new ones by executive order without Congress’ assent.  It seems his attitude was captured in a recent New York Times article headlined “Let’s give up on the Constitution.”
Let’s instead hold our elected representatives to their oaths of office to abide by and protect our Constitution.  That document is, after all, what guarantees our freedoms and makes our country exceptional.

Kicking the Defense Can

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Congress spent the New Year holiday kicking the can down the road while going off the fiscal cliff.  If this sounds like a new form of extreme sport, it isn't.  Neither is it an example of representative government attending properly to the nation's needs.
Of particular concern is the fact that one of the issues postponed for two months is whether the U.S. military is going to be subjected to further, catastrophic budget cuts.  Those now pending would devastate its ability to ensure the common defense and inflict a loss of as many as 1.3 million jobs on a still-struggling economic recovery.
Our government has no higher responsibility than protecting its people from all enemies, foreign and domestic.  We can't safely defer action needed to ensure it can reliably do that.

Defense Cuts Either Way

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
As the President and congressional leaders enter the final throes of their negotiations on avoiding the fiscal cliff, much is uncertain.  One thing seems clear, however:  President Obama is poised to make deep reductions in our national security capabilities, irrespective of the outcome of this weekend’s talks.
If there is no deal that prevents the so-called sequestration mechanism from cutting another $500 billion from defense spending, what Obama Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has called a “doomsday machine” will be unleashed on our military.  The administration will make across-the-board reductions in every program, irrespective of their importance.
And even if there is a deal, Mr. Obama seems determined to further dismantle our nuclear deterrent in 2013 – perhaps unilaterally.  Either way, he will be making the world a more dangerous place for America and her people.
