Russian Retaliation

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Congress recently normalized trade relations with Russia, but established a sanction against Russians associated with egregious human rights violations. The provision is known as the Magnitsky Amendment after a lawyer in Moscow who was imprisoned, tortured and murdered for defending the rights of individuals seen as enemies of Vladimir Putin’s increasingly despotic regime.
How has that regime responded? By punishing Russian children. Yes, that’s right: the thuggish president and his puppets in parliament have cooked up retaliatory legislation that precludes Americans from adopting Russian orphans. Untold numbers of these children are suffering in institutions where they lack nurturing care and sometimes even the bare necessities.
With this retaliation against its own kids, the Russian government has once again revealed its true colors – and the futility of President Obama’s one-way effort to “reset” bilateral relations.

Sequestration's Impact

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
With efforts to avert the so-called “fiscal cliff” collapsing, the Pentagon faces an imminent “catastrophe.”  For months, its senior civilian and military leaders have warned that the effect of a further $500 billion in spending cuts – on top of roughly $800 billion already eliminated or in the works – will be disastrous for America’s military and security.
Yesterday, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta announced that massive government layoffs may not occur immediately, but could be forthcoming.  He promised that, if that happens, advance notice will be given.
Unfortunately, the industrial base underpinning our armed forces has already begun what may be one million such layoffs. And Team Obama’s pre-election machinations kept most of those employees from getting the warnings required by law.  Consequently, sequestration will harm our economy and devastate the common defense.

The Unaccountability of Hillary Clinton

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Something extraordinary happened yesterday in Washington, D.C.  Four senior State Department officials actually took responsibility for failures that occurred on their watch prior to, during and after the murderous attack in Benghazi last September 11th.   It’s heartening to see some actual accountability following a damning after-action review.
But wait.  As is more typically the case in official Washington circles, others who should also be held accountable are not accepting responsibility, especially for the larger policy failure of engaging murderous Islamists that spawned, among other things, the Benghazi debacle.
One such person is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  She recently said “the buck stops with me.” Yet she is sending her subordinates to Capitol Hill today and making implausible medical excuses for her unavailability.  All the more reason for holding Hillary accountable.

The Unaccountability Report

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The final results of the 2012 election are now in: The investigation into the events before, during and after the September 11th terrorist attack on U.S. facilities in Libya has confirmed Barack Obama is the winner.
Yes, the so-called Accountability Report found numerous failures on the part of his administration with respect to security and other practices. But no one is being held accountable.
More importantly, even before it was completed, the report had served its principal purpose by allowing hard questions that might have cost Mr. Obama his reelection to be deferred until after it was over.
Another win for President Obama is the report’s narrow focus on the Benghazi episode, neglecting altogether the real failure – his policy of engaging Islamists of which it was but one, tragic example.

RIP Senator Daniel Inouye

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The death yesterday of Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii marks the passing of the Greatest Generation’s Democrats in Congress who believed in, and practiced, the philosophy Ronald Reagan called “peace through strength.”
Senator Inouye came by this conviction the old fashioned way: He lived it. As a young Japanese-American in World War II, he earne the nation’s highest military decoration – the Medal of Honor – for the heroic combat that cost him his right arm. He never forgot the horrible lessons of war.
And as a senior legislator, Senator Inouye worked tirelessly to ensure that America was so formidable that it could reliably deter aggression – and, if deterrence nonetheless failed, that America would surely prevail.
We will miss Senator Daniel Inouye and the lifelong contribution he made to the bipartisan pursuit of peace through strength.

Hillary Can't Hide

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
All signs now point to Hillary Clinton running for president in 2016. So perhaps it was not coincidental that last week, a case of stomach flu kept her from joining Islamists in London to negotiate restrictions on Americans' freedom of expression.
Then, we are told, she got dehydrated, fainted and suffered a concussion. Now she can't make her scheduled Capitol Hill appearances on Thursday to testify about the attack on American facilities in Benghazi last September 11th. As a practical matter, that likely means she will be a former Secretary of State before she provides such testimony - if at all.
Hillary Clinton may be able briefly to run but she cannot permanently hide from her involvement in policies aimed at "engaging" Islamists that restrict our constitutional freedom of speech and contributed to Benghazigate.
