Hainan Island

Police responsible for China’s Hainan Island put the world on notice yesterday: They will intercept, board, search and, in some cases at least, seize what they call “illegal vessels” in the South China Sea claimed by Beijing.
China expert Gordon Chang warns that this pronouncement is a serious threat to our national and economic security -- not least because of that sea’s strategic importance to the transit of world trade and energy supplies.
Dr. Chang believes that this pronouncement is eerily “reminiscent of the remilitarization of the Rhineland by Nazi Germany” in the run-up to World War II. Back then, the West failed to understand – let alone, to respond properly to that provocative act. Thus was the stage set for the worst bloodletting in history. We must not make that mistake again.

Palestinian Statehood

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The world’s hostility towards Israel will be made clear today as the United Nations formally endorses “Palestine” as a non-member “state.”  The Obama administration professes opposition to this step but since the decision is being taken by a majority vote of the UN General Assembly in which the United States has no veto, the outcome is a foregone conclusion.
Now, this so-called state of Palestine has no internationally recognized borders.  Worse, the Palestinians currently have two governments – and the one that runs the Gaza Strip is a designated terrorist group, Hamas.
The United Nations increasingly does the bidding of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation – Muslim nations using the UN to advance their anti-Israel and anti-freedom agenda.  It’s time to stop dignifying these multinational organizations, and tolerating their use against Israel and us.

The New Pharaoh

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Yesterday’s massive demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square offer one of the most hopeful signs since the so-called Arab Spring morphed into an Islamist Winter. Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians turned out to oppose the Muslim Brotherhood’s accelerating efforts to subject their country to brutally repressive shariah law.
These protests were triggered by the announcement last week of what amounts to a coup d’etat by Mohamed Morsi, the former Brotherhood leader who was narrowly elected Egypt’s president last summer. Morsi declared that he, and he alone, would rule his country, prompting some to call him a “new pharaoh.”
The Obama administration – which bears no small responsibility for enabling the Muslim Brotherhood to come to power in Egypt – must forcefully repudiate Morsi’s coup. And every American should stand with those Egyptians courageously opposing it.

Susan Rice Meets With GOP

UN Ambassador Susan Rice meets today with three Senators who said they would block her expected nomination to become the next Secretary of State.  The legislators are upset by her central role in misleading voters about the murderous jihadist attack in Benghazi on September 11th.
Amb. Rice excuses her conduct, claiming she was just repeating erroneous talking points supplied by the intelligence community.  And congressional investigators still can’t tell who deleted the fact that al Qaeda-related groups were believed responsible – and who put in the fraudulent narrative that the attack stemmed from a riot over some video.
What we do know is that Susan Rice is an architect of the Obama policy of engaging, enriching and empowering Islamists who are our enemies.  That’s reason enough to keep her from becoming Secretary of State.

Morsi's Surprise

The folly of the Obama administration’s embrace of the Muslim Brotherhood is becoming more palpable by the day. The latest evidence was provided last week – right after senior U.S. officials effusively praised Mohamed Morsi, the Brotherhood’s Egyptian president, for successfully brokering a cease-fire between Israel and his organization’s Palestinian franchise, the designated terrorist organization called Hamas.
Never mind that Mr. Morsi’s putative achievement was actually a diplomatic coup for his fellow jihadists. It precludes Israel from continuing military operations against Hamas. But it doesn’t prevent Hamas from preparing the next round of attacks against the Jewish State.
The following day, Morsi effectively declared himself the dictator of Egypt. A lot of Egyptians are furious that their revolution merely replaced a secular tyrant with an Islamist one. We should be, too.

Missile Defense

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Nearly thirty years ago, President Ronald Reagan declared that it was time to see what could be done to protect lives from the danger of missile attacks, not simply avenge them.

With those words, he launched what became known as the Strategic Defense Initiative or SDI.  I had the privilege of working for Mr. Reagan in the Pentagon and helped advance his commitment to missile defense.  Among other steps we took were to begin a partnership with Israel on jointly developing and deploying anti-missile systems.

Thankfully, one of the fruits of that partnership is saving Israeli lives today.  The need for and effectiveness of the anti-missile system known as Iron Dome is a vindication of the Reagan vision – and an urgent reminder of the need to improve the protection of our own people.
