Energy Insecurity

America’s ability to meet its energy needs reliably and affordably may be the single most important determinant of our nation’s future economic performance and national security.
Unfortunately, Team Obama seems determined to do everything possible to continue our reliance on unreliable and costly foreign sources of energy. Moratoriums on offshore drilling, blocking the Keystone XL pipeline and now precluding exploration in eleven million acres of Alaska’s petroleum reserve are examples.
The next shoe to drop may be the imposition of environmental or other impediments to hydraulic fracturing – a technique that has allowed immense gas and oil reserves to be tapped here. An anti-fracking film staring Matt Damon and funded by an interested party, the United Arab Emirates, is calculated to perpetuate our energy insecurity. Will we allow that to happen?

In last night’s vice presidential debate, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan addressed their respective tickets’ views on our national security and foreign policy.
Their conversation showed that the Obama-Biden administration has real vulnerabilities in this portfolio, including the Vice President’s untruthful explanation of what Team Obama knew and when it knew it about the murderous attack in Benghazi on September 11th. Then, there was his implausible insistence that Iranian progress towards a nuclear weapon is not an immediate problem because Tehran supposedly lacks a weapon in which to put its growing stocks of enriched uranium.
To win the White House, however – and the chance to make the needed course corrections, the Republicans are going to have to clarify much more sharply their differences and the stakes. They better start doing it now.

Without Warning

The Obama administration has repeatedly disregarded Congress and the law. Now it wants you to pay for the consequences.
In July, the Labor Department told defense contractors not to fulfill their statutory obligation to warn employees of layoffs arising from the massive sequestration budget cuts that will kick in – all other things being equal – on January 2nd. The administration’s problem is that, under the law, such notices would be handed out just days before the November election.
Then late last month, the administration actually told those businesses that the federal government, meaning us taxpayers, would pay for any costs or liability the companies face from violating the law. This is simply outrageous. The president is not above the law and he must not be allowed to make us liable for his violating it.

Mitt Romney did what he needed to do during his debate with Barack Obama in Denver last night. That is not simply because the Republican candidate was focused, articulate and presentable. By contrast, the President was flat, defensive and appeared unable to go toe-to-toe with his rival.
The moderator, Jim Lehrer of PBS, deserves credit, too. There were none of the journalists’ seemingly self-promoting and intrusive “gotcha” questions so common in past presidential debates. Lehrer allowed the candidates to go at it, guiding the conversation without getting in the way.
A format that lets the presidential contenders actually debate one another may be a novel concept for American politics. But it should be used much more often if the purpose is to inform the voters – and give them a reason to vote.

Presidential Debate

The political impact of tonight’s first presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will only partly be a function of the two men’s actual performance. It will also be a product of how they did relative to expectations.
President Obama’s handlers have assiduously lowered those for their candidate, claiming he hasn’t debated in four years and is rusty. This is the typical, sensible approach since it tends to support after-the-fact claims that the candidate in question performed better than expected.
Unfortunately for Mr. Romney, a chief surrogate – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie – did just the opposite last Sunday. He predicted Romney would do so well “the entire narrative of this race is going to change.” We’ll see. But if it doesn’t, the fault may lie less with the candidate than with his spokesman.

Obama Promoting Sharia?

The Muslim Brotherhood is an organization that seeks to impose its totalitarian, supremacist shariah doctrine worldwide. Its mission in this country is destroying Western civilization from within. These would seem to be powerful reasons to seek to defeat the organization.
Instead, President Obama has from the get-go sought to legitimate, engage and enrich the Muslim Brotherhood. He helped bring it to power in the strategically pivotal nation of Egypt and sent billions to its regime there. And his administration has entrusted influential positions to Muslim Brothers and other Islamist operatives.
Now, it has included a Brotherhood front organization – the Muslim Public Affairs Council – in an official delegation to a human rights conference in Poland addressing “religious intolerance.” But Mr. President, the Brotherhood is a driving force behind religious intolerance, not an ally in combating it.
