Stormy Weather

Millions of Americans are still in the dark days after a violent thunderstorm knocked out their power.  As they suffer through an intolerable heat wave, many are understandably furious at the delay in restoring their electricity.
But what if the lights weren’t going to come on again in another day or two?  What if instead of a storm interrupting service, someone had taken out the electrical grid with an attack on its backbone – several hundred, nearly irreplaceable transformers?  Evidence is growing that North Korea, Iran and perhaps others are developing a capability known as electro-magnetic pulse weapons which could do just that.
Power outages today could have a silver-lining if they compel our leadership to take the several, essential steps needed to harden our grid.  There’s no time to waste.

Rummy Is Back

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
An “elder statesman” is usually someone who once held power and hopes to continue to exercise influence – even though they lack the judgment and common sense that would warrant them doing so.
Five former Secretaries of State epitomized this phenomenon when they jointly endorsed the fatally flawed Law of the Sea Treaty.  Fortunately, they were promptly rebutted by an authentic statesman – former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld – who actually knows what is wrong with this treaty and urges its rejection.
“Rummy” rendered a further public service by warning last week against the American weakness being promoted by Team Obama’s budget cuts, serial foreign policy disasters and failure to adapt institutionally and otherwise to an increasingly dangerous world.  Here’s hoping we’ll hear a lot more in the months ahead from this steadfast statesman.

Protecting Deceit

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
A big week for the Supreme Court has been a bad one for America. The Supremes pretty much eviscerated federalism in their ruling on Arizona’s immigration law and gave Congress a license to steal in their ruling that Obamacare is legit since it’s a permissible tax, not an unconstitutional mandate.
Another ruling got less attention.  The Court also struck down a law known as the Stolen Valor Act, which prohibited fraudulent claims to military decorations.
Casting such behavior as a protected exercise of free speech simply reinforces a practice that has become all too common in our country: lying, fraud and deceit, usually for the purpose of self-promotion.  President Reagan once warned that if you want more of something subsidize it.  The same can be said of protecting it.

The Syrian Opposition

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Syria’s dictator, Bashar Assad, has declared that his country is now at war.  Not exactly a news flash, but Assad’s announcement suggests that the arming of the Syrian opposition by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and reportedly by our own government is now translating into a full-fledged civil war.
That means we are now involved in providing weapons to rebels who are, at best, associated with the Muslim Brotherhood.  At worst, they are tied to al Qaeda.
If they succeed in overthrowing Assad’s regime, it is likely that we will simply see it replaced by another one whose repressiveness will be no less brutal.  But it will be justified by the Islamic doctrine of shariah.
Should that happen, we are simply compounding the danger of threats to our interests – and perhaps to us.
