Last week, President Obama told new graduates of the Air Force Academy that, despite massive cuts in defense spending being made by his administration, “We will maintain our military superiority in all areas -- air, land, sea, space and cyber.”
Such a statement is a great send-off for future leaders of our armed forces. Unfortunately, it can’t possibly be true.
With the nearly $800 billion already excised from the Pentagon budgets over the next ten years – to say nothing of the devastating further $500 billion cut due to kick in next year – we will be lucky to be competitive with future adversaries. Superiority will, in important respects, be out of the question.
We need the truth. And, if given it, Americans will surely reject this formula for weakness and insecurity.

Remembering Those Who Gave Us Our Freedom

Memorial Day is about saluting those who gave their lives in the defense of our country. Their sacrifice extends from the founding of this nation and continues even now in far-flung places like Afghanistan.
Today especially we need to remember why such sacrifice is required.
Here’s how Ronald Reagan explained it in 1961: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.”
We must never forget that responsibility – or those who have sacrificed everything in fulfilling it.

There’s bad news and bad news from the latest round of multinational negotiations with Iran over its nuclear weapons program. First, the U.S., Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany – the Perm 5 plus 1 – offered a number of significant concessions, but couldn’t get the Iranians to agree.
Worse yet, the two sides are going to resume the negotiations in June. That means the mullahs of Iran have at least another month to translate their uranium enrichment and covert weaponization activities into acquisition of the Bomb.
In other words, the Obama administration and its partners in these talks are giving Iran what it most wants: time. If we persist in such recklessness, we will soon confront the inevitable consequence: The world’s most dangerous weapons in the hands of one of its most dangerous regimes.

Want to know whether the end of the Afghan war “as we understand it” that President Obama promised last week will produce an outcome consistent with our security? Look no further than what happened yesterday in Pakistan.
Dr. Shakil Afridi, a Pakistani physician who helped us find Osama bin Laden, has just been sentenced to 33 years in prison for “treason.”
In other words, the Pakistani government wants to protect, not defeat, such enemies of our country – including notably, the Taliban. And you can bet Pakistan will do everything possible to help restore them to power as we bug out of neighboring Afghanistan.
We are on notice. Dr. Afridi’s fate – or worse – will soon be shared by many Afghans who made the mistake of helping us defeat our common foes.

Last night, former Attorney General Michael Mukasey, said the unsayable. He served up a withering indictment of the past and present practice of misconstruing – and, thereby, intensifying – the central ideological threat of our time.
Specifically, at a Center for Security Policy dinner in New York City honoring him for his previous, and continuing, public service, Judge Mukasey warned of the stealthy form of subversive warfare being used to bring the totalitarian Islamic doctrine of shariah here.
The former Attorney General served notice on his successor and the rest of the Obama administration: Stop legitimating and empowering the Muslim Brotherhood and what it calls “civilization jihad” by, for example, engaging their front groups, like the Islamic Society of North America, as advisors and partners. LOST Underminds American Freedom

Tomorrow, the Obama administration will begin pressing the United States Senate to approve a treaty Ronald Reagan rejected thirty years ago. Unfortunately, the Law of the Sea Treaty, or LOST, has not improved with age.
When Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Martin Dempsey testify, Senators will be told this accord has been fixed since Reagan’s day, is necessary for our security and will enhance our sovereignty. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
As things stand now, critics willing and able to tell that truth have not been invited to testify. Team Obama seems determined to reduce the Senate to a rubber stamp – as it did with the New START Treaty in 2010. Such a process simply underscores the unacceptability of LOST.
