Pleas For Sgt. Bergdahl

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Yesterday the nation’s top civilian and military leaders responded to heartbreaking pleas for help.
Those pleas come from the family of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier seized by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2009 and held captive ever since.
The trouble is, as Sgt. Bergdahl’s family revealed earlier this week, the Taliban have been insisting, in secret negotiations with the Obama Administration, that in order for him to be freed, five of their top leaders currently detained in Guantanamo Bay must be released in exchange.
The five are senior commanders, intelligence officers and otherwise exceedingly dangerous jihadists. Painful as it is, the United States and free world more generally, cannot afford to return such men to the battlefield and make no mistake that’s what will happen if they are let loose.

War On Women

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Today in Washington, the real war on women is getting fresh scrutiny.  A national Press Club event featuring four female authorities on the subject illuminates the threat posed by shariah to women around the world.  That includes, increasingly, here.
Shariah is the name for a totalitarian, supremacist doctrine the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists are trying to impose worldwide.  Under shariah, women can be beaten, disfigured and even killed with impunity by their husbands, separated from their children and denied rights the U.S. Constitution declares unalienable.

The Fall of Richard Luger

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Elites in Washington and elsewhere are mourning the political demise yesterday of a man they inevitably describe as a “statesman” – Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana, who lost his bid for reelection in a primary fight with conservative State Treasurer Richard Murdoch.
We are about to get another dose of Sen. Lugar’s brand of statesmanship.  He will join Massachusetts’ liberal Democratic Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry in trying to jam through the U.S. Senate an obsolete, ill-advised and sovereignty-sapping accord called the Law of the Sea Treaty – better, and appropriately, known as LOST.
Thankfully, Republican voters of Indiana had enough of Dick Lugar’s help enacting an agenda favored by the transnational Left.  Now we must keep him from doing so with respect to LOST in his final months in office.

Israeli Master-stroke

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
In Israel last night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consolidated power in what is being described as a political master-stroke. Among the many consequences of his new unity government with his country’s second largest party, is that he has the support needed to neutralize the existential threat facing his nation: an Iranian Islamic Republic armed with nuclear weapons.
Mr. Netanyahu now controls roughly 90 seats in the 120 member Israeli parliament and added Kadima’s leader, a serious retired general named Shaul Mofaz, to his team.
Such a feat could not come at a more important time. Thanks to the Obama administration’s willingness to appease the mullahs in Iran rather than defeat them, that task will fall to Israel. Bibi Netanyahu now has the political strength to do it.

The Downfall of Europe

Voters in France and Greece have just pronounced what may prove to be a farewell to the centralized, socialist European experiment that has been abuilding since the end of World War II.
True, the French voters elected socialist Francois Hollande, who favors the European Union and reflexively supports its creeping strangulation of national sovereignty on the continent. Still, his electorate, like the Greeks’, want no part of the EU’s main project at the moment – fiscal discipline and budgetary austerity.
Economic turmoil, rising concerns about immigration, the threat posed by Islamization and the reemergence of widespread anti-semitism suggest that Europe may soon be in for another of the cataclysms that have plagued it for nearly all of recorded history. If that happens again, our own tranquility and prosperity will be jeopardized, as well.

Russian Reset

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Barack Obama “reset” U.S.-Russian relations by unilaterally abandoning a missile defense system in Europe designed to protect that continent and America from threats increasingly posed by the Russians’ clients in Iran.
That act of appeasement was followed by a New START arms control deal the Russians insist gives them a veto over qualitative or quantitative improvements in our anti-missile systems.  Mr. Obama also promised the Kremlin that he would be “more flexible” after the election – signaling that, if reelected, he will give away even more of the store to Russia’s thuggish president, Vladimir Putin.
Now, the Russians are responding to such American weakness with threats to attack any defenses – however modest – that  we deploy in Europe.  What is needed is a reset all right – to an American policy of “peace through strength.”
