Chinese Drama

Chinese politics are undergoing an extraordinary public turmoil amidst a transition to a new generation of leaders. It appears to reflect struggles between those who have been in charge for decades and a faction currying support among the countless millions in China yet to benefit from the country’s economic miracle.
Their champion, a regional party chief whose populism was a throwback to the hardline policies of modern China’s founder, Mao Tse Tung, has recently been purged. That may not end the ferment, though.
The big question is: What role will the Chinese military play in sorting out the future leadership and what price will it extract? Might it be more money for weapons and more latitude to act aggressively – at our expense and that of our allies in Asia and perhaps elsewhere?

Denying The Right To Freedom Of The Press

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Some scientists object to an Obama administration decision that would bar publication of scientific papers detailing how the so-called bird flu virus could be genetically altered in ways that could make it even more contagious among humans – and, therefore, far more deadly.
Critics say the effect will be to deny the international community knowledge that, in the right hands, could save lives. There is, however, no way to ensure such knowledge would be confined to the right hands – let alone stay there.
And if states interested in biological warfare or terrorists were able to acquire this sort of information, a catastrophic pandemic could be unleashed. This case is a reminder of why the U.S. needs effective export controls and should exercise great care when it comes to relaxing, let alone eliminating, them.

Losing Our Advantage

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The Obama administration has just struck a deal with our sometime allies in the government of Afghanistan. It will severely limit the use of perhaps our most important remaining advantage there – “night raids” in which special forces use the cover of darkness to neutralize Taliban operatives.
This agreement seems likely to preclude our effective conduct of these operations going forward. At a minimum, it will probably get some of our best special forces personnel killed.
That’s because, from now on, the Afghans will not only lead these night raids. Under most circumstances, their judges will have to pre-approve them. And our troops can’t go into targeted buildings or interrogate detainees without Afghan permission. The authors of this deal call it a success. Unfortunately, it virtually ensures the failure of our Afghan mission.

A Time To Reflect On Religious Freedom

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Today is one of the holiest in the calendars of Christianity and Judaism. It’s a good time to consider what’s happening to both faiths at the hands of Islamists.
In Saudi Arabia, the country’s top cleric recently declared that all churches on the Arabian Peninsula must be destroyed. Many have already been attacked in Egypt, now under the sway of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Anti-semitism is on the rise, both in the Mideast and in Europe, much of it fueled by the virulent Jew-hatred promoted by the supremacist Islamic doctrine known as shariah.
Meanwhile, in America, the Obama administration is engaging the Muslim Brotherhood, legitimating and facilitating its rising power. The result will predictably be more favorable treatment for intolerant Islamists, at the expense of Christians and Jews, here and elsewhere.

The Muslim Brotherhood in America

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood is engaged in what the Washington Post has called a “charm offensive” in America. That should be a non-starter since the Brotherhood’s self-declared mission in this country is “a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within.”
The Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate for the Egyptian presidency just announced, moreover, that, if he’s elected as expected, his “first and final objective” would be introducing Islam’s totalitarian code known as shariah.
No amount of charm should obscure the fact that an Egypt under shariah would be a menace to its own people, a danger to our ally, Israel, and, together with its operatives in this country, a jihadist threat here as well. The Muslim Brotherhood should be seen for what it is: an enemy, not a partner.

Discarding The Scientific Method?

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Throughout history, sound science has been rooted in realistic experimentation. Last week, the National Academy of Science turned the scientific method on its head with a study that says we can permanently dispense with realistic tests of the very old nuclear weapons that ultimately guarantee our national security.
This is policy masquerading as science. The authors believe in complete nuclear disarmament and see an irreversible end to nuclear testing as a way to hasten that goal.
You don’t need to be a highfalutin scientist though to understand that we must have a nuclear deterrent for the foreseeable future, that realistic tests are necessary to ensure its viability and that we should not become party to a treaty that would preclude the sort of rigorous testing relied upon by good science – and competent scientists.
