Remembering the Falklands

Thirty years ago this week, the people of Great Britain woke up to find themselves in a completely unexpected war.
With the surprise invasion by Argentina of the UK’s Falkland Islands, Britain’s national preoccupation with a dismal economy, energy, health care and other domestic issues suddenly was shunted aside.  Margaret Thatcher’s government and her countrymen threw themselves into mounting a challenging and enormously costly long-distance campaign to retake the islands.
The Iron Lady succeeded, thanks to substantial help received from her close ally, our President Ronald Reagan.  It was an object example of the continuing validity of the Gipper’s principle of “peace through strength.” Lest we find ourselves even more surprised than the Brits thirty years ago, and have to pay even more, we better not abandon that principle today.

Who Is Teaching American's About Sharia?

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
One of the most important challenges we face as a free people is understanding the true nature of – and threat posed by – a totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine its adherents call shariah.
So, it would seem to be good news that a $3 million public education campaign is being launched nationwide in order to “clarify” what shariah is. Unless, that is, the group conducting such a campaign is the Islamic Circle of North America, a front for the Muslim Brotherhood.
As we are seeing in Egypt at the moment, the Brotherhood is fully prepared to lie about its repressive agenda until it is too late for its opponents to resist. Under shariah, that’s called taqiyya – dissembling for the faith – and it’s not only allowed; it’s obligatory.
We need the truth about shariah, not taqiyya.

A Nefarious Meeting

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Today in New Delhi, leaders of the so-called BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – met to discuss, among other things, how they can supplant the U.S. dollar as the world’s reserve currency. This is an unfriendly act on the part of nations we are endlessly told are our international partners.
The BRICS initiative comes as another nation that is unmistakably hostile, Iran, has announced that it will henceforth accept currencies other than dollars for its oil.
It is unclear whether these countries or others will be able soon to end the dollar’s reign as the planet’s reserve currency. Such a step would have far-reaching economic – and possibly national security – implications for America, however. Given the stakes, the mere fact that they are trying to do it requires our urgent attention.

McFarlane on Methanol

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Yesterday, President Reagan’s National Security Advisor Bud McFarlane told a Washington conference that – all other things being equal – the price of oil is going to rise by 2014 from $125 per barrel today to over $200.
If that happens, we’ll see gas at the pump selling for about $7 a gallon, an economy in serious recession and the transfer of countless billions of additional petrodollars to some of America’s worst enemies.
We have an alternative: Add methanol – an alcohol derived from, among other things, natural gas – as a fuel for our cars. It turns out this can be done quickly and relatively inexpensively, if we have the will to do it. My bet is we’ll do it later if oil costs way more and its availability plummets. Why not do it now?

Obama's Last Election

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
President Obama’s critics have long warned that, should he be reelected and never have to face the voters again, he would feel free to pursue an even more radical program for – in his words – transforming the United States of America.
Now this worrisome proposition has been confirmed by, of all people, Mr. Obama, himself. Caught unawares by an open microphone as he was talking yesterday with his Russian counterpart, the President asked to be given “space.” He said, “This is my last election. Afterwards, I will have more flexibility.”
Whether it is a question of giving away the store to the Russians on missile defense after November or anything else, the American people should know what Mr. Obama is prepared to do in a second term before, not after his “last election.”

Obama's Unilateral Disarmament

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Today in South Korea, President Obama enthused again about his vision of a world without nuclear weapons. He declared that, since he was convinced we had more of them than we need, he is going to reduce our arsenal – according to some accounts to one the size of Pakistan’s.
Mr. Obama suggested that he would get the Russians to do the same. But, if not, his subordinates are signaling that he is prepared to disarm us unilaterally.
Ironically, Mr. Obama also commended his South Korean hosts for developing nuclear power, but not nuclear weapons. Evidently, he has no clue that’s because they have relied on our nuclear umbrella. If we close it, we better expect that such allies will get their own – leading to a world with more nuclear powers, not none.
