The Return of Putin

This weekend, Vladimir Putin will be reelected to the position of president of Russia.  One can say this with certainty even though the voting won’t occur until Sunday.  That’s because Russians today live not in a real democracy but what has been called a kleptocracy – a corrupt system where power is in the hands of Putin, his cronies and the mafia.
While Putin never really gave up his control of the Kremlin, his formal restoration to the presidency will prove to be bad for the Russian people and for us.  For them, it will mean intensifying repression and ripping off of their national treasure.
For us, it will mean growing aggressiveness in Moscow, with military buildups at home and in all the wrong places abroad. We’re in for a rough ride.

Truth Behind The Pakistani Relationship

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Already-strained relations between the United States and Pakistan are at risk of worsening further. Pakistani leaders have renewed their vehement denials that they were aware al Qaeda’s Osama bin Laden had lived comfortably in their midst for years.
You don’t need a sophisticated intelligence analysis to tell you what the truth must be. Common sense says senior officials had to know that a man with longstanding ties to Pakistani intelligence was housed in a massive compound in a key military town.
Moreover, as Newt Gingrich pointed out in Georgia yesterday, the Pakistanis are prosecuting a doctor who helped us find bin Laden, not the people responsible for hiding him in plain sight.
We need the truth. If the Pakistanis are actually our enemies, we better stop pretending they are our friends.

America The Good

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Opposition research into Rick Santorum’s presidential campaign has revealed what is, for some, an alarming fact. Four years ago, he declared that, “Satan has his sights on the United States…: a good, decent, powerful, influential country.”
His critics complain about the use of such religious imagery. But they really seem upset by his characterization of a world in which evil exists and threatens the good.
Worse, many seem to believe that America isn’t so good, that it’s morally equivalent to the most repressive and aggressive of nations.
Kudos to Senator Santorum for seeing the truth and speaking it so forcefully. Ronald Reagan said America is mankind’s last best hope. God help us, and freedom-loving people everywhere, if we lose sight of this nation’s goodness, a huge step towards our succumbing to evil.

Afghanistan's Green-on-Blue

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
“Green-on-blue” is a phenomenon that could turn President Obama’s strategy for withdrawing from Afghanistan into a rout.
“Green” refers to Afghans who are supposedly our allies. We are training them to serve as their country’s future military and police. Yet, an increasing number are murderously attacking the “blue” – namely, our troops.
By some estimates, over 50 American and NATO servicemen have been killed to date by supposed comrades who betray their trust. Two were just shot in the back of their heads inside the Afghan Interior Ministry. The Taliban, with whom we are now negotiating, took credit.
Accidental burning of Quran’s may be the latest pretext. But we will see more green-on-blue attacks if our enemies perceive us as weak and irresolute, not determined to defeat them – in Afghanistan or anywhere else.

Give Us A Fuel Choice

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
President Obama and his Republican rivals are outdoing each other on the need to lower gas prices.  But, the cost at the pump continues to increase.
If we really want to reduce the price of a fill-up – and stop enriching suppliers who are hostile to us, we have to change the game.  We have to end OPEC’s monopoly on the fuels we use to power our vehicles.
It turns out that many late model cars in America can, with minor modifications, use not only gasoline but fuels like ethanol and methanol that we can produce relatively cheaply here at home – in the case of methanol from our vast natural gas deposits.
Give us “fuel choice” and we can drive our cars and really drive down gas prices – once and for all.

Blind Ideology

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Last week, we learned that President Obama is actively considering reducing the U.S. nuclear arsenal to as few as 300 weapons.
This week, Vladimir Putin, the rabidly anti-American autocrat who runs Russia, announced that he plans to modernize his country’s nuclear arsenal with 400 new intercontinental-range ballistic missiles.
Unfortunately, the Russians are not the only ones ignoring Mr. Obama’s bid to rid the world of nuclear arms. China, Pakistan, North Korea and Iran are among those hostile to us who are also building up their arsenals.
Under these circumstances, it is downright reckless to be pursuing what amounts to unilateral U.S. disarmament. Thirty-four Members of Congress have warned Mr. Obama that such decisions must be made on the basis not of “blind ideology,” but what will deter attack against this country. Amen.
