McCain's Views On The Broterhood

Republican John McCain has been traveling the Mideast with a bipartisan delegation of his Senate colleagues. He seems to think the region’s ascendant Islamists of the Muslim Brotherhood are people America can do business with.
Call it pragmatism. Perhaps it is simply a cynical bid to secure the release of sixteen U.S. hostages, some of whom work in Egypt for the International Republican Institute, a non-governmental organization Sen. McCain has long chaired.
Whatever his rationale, John McCain’s warming to the Brotherhood is strategically catastrophic. It fails to recognize that group’s determination to destroy infidel nations like ours. It signals bipartisan support for giving the Brothers billions in foreign aid, and maybe arms. And it offers political cover to one of President Obama’s most insidious and destructive policies. This must not stand.

Chinese Transition

A drama is playing out in China with possibly momentous significance for Communist rule there – and for U.S.-Chinese relations.
On February 6th, a top police chief of a Chinese megacity sought asylum in the American consulate in Chengdu, 200 miles away. He reportedly brought with him documents concerning corruption involving China’s leading anti-U.S. nationalist, Bo Xilai.
Bo’s allies sent armored forces to threaten the consulate, which surrendered the would-be defector, Wang Lijun. The Obama administration turned Wang over to the authorities in Beijing rather than upset the U.S. visit of one of Bo’s rivals, the man expected to be China’s next leader, Xi Jinping.
So far, we haven’t surrendered Wang’s documents. We probably will, though – in the process likely emboldening China’s anti-American factions and complicating further the transition there. Stay tuned.

Nuclear Inspectors Back In Iran

Nuclear inspectors are back in Iran. As Yogi Berra famously said, it feels like “déjà vu all over again.”
That’s because this the umpteenth time international monitors have tried to get the Iranians to admit the purpose of their program is to get nuclear weapons, not nuclear power.
It won’t happen this time, either. At best, the inspectors will see only what the mullahs intend – which will be nothing instructive.
More likely, the representatives of the so-called “international community” will be humiliated again, and Tehran will be that much closer to getting the Bomb.
At this point, more talk and useless inspections merely increase the threat posed to Israel and to us. The only hope for preventing calamity is military action. Given the stakes, it better be ours, not just Israel’s.

China's Cyberwarfare

President Obama is sending dangerous signals to visiting Communist Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, presumed to be the next leader of his country.
For example, President Obama gave Xi the full red-carpet treatment on Monday, despite fresh evidence of China’s relentless cyberwarfare against American government and business computers. It seems that for over a decade Chinese hackers have been ripping off the technology and secrets of Nortel, a major U.S. telecommunications company.
Then, despite indications that China is secretly and massively building up its nuclear arsenal, Mr. Obama is actively considering unilaterally cutting the U.S. nuclear deterrent by as much as 80%.
Ignoring strategically threatening Chinese actions ensures we will be subjected to more of them. Worse, by rewarding such actions, we not only invite China’s contempt, we deserve it.

Nuclear Disarmament

Candidate Barack Obama promised to “fundamentally transform the United States.” Evidently, that includes ending America’s status as a nuclear superpower.
As President, he seeks to rid the world of such arms, starting with ours.
Press reports reveal that he is actively considering proposals to cut eighty percent of our arsenal, perhaps unilaterally. That would leave America with a nuclear deterrent roughly the size of Pakistan’s and a fraction of that of Russia and probably much smaller than the one Communist China is secretly amassing. It comes as North Korea, Iran and other potential adversaries are building up nuclear forces.
If this kind of radical unilateral disarmament is what Mr. Obama is prepared to contemplate amidst a presidential campaign, imagine how radically he will transform – and undermine – our security if he is reelected.

The Future of the Chinese Communist Regime

Today, the presumed future leader of Communist China will get what might be called the red-carpet treatment in Washington.
To that end, Xi Jinping is being portrayed in a manner reminiscent of the make-overs given to Communist leaders of yesteryear. We are always told that they like things like American music, sports and scotch and that we can do business with them.
A reality check is needed. If Xi actually makes it through the transition now underway – and he reportedly faces serious challenges from hardline anti-American factions in Beijing – it seems likely that he will be beholden to the king-making Chinese military. That will probably mean more money and latitude for the People’s Liberation Army to behave aggressively towards us.
Totalitarian transitions are often tricky and a lousy time to gut U.S. defenses.
