INTERPOL Enforcing Sharia?

Over the weekend, a Saudi columnist named Hamza Kashgari was detained in Malaysia, reportedly on the basis of an alert issued by the international police agency known as Interpol. Kashgari was then sent back to Saudi Arabia where he faces almost certain death.
Mr. Kashgari’s crime? He criticized the founder of Islam, Mohammed, on his Twitter account. Saudi clerics have denounced him for apostasy. And thousands of his countrymen are demanding the columnist’s execution.
If Interpol is now enforcing blasphemy laws of the totalitarian doctrine Islamists call shariah, it’s not just somebody else’s problem; it’s ours. Because in a December 2009 executive order, President Obama granted Interpol authority to engage in extraordinary and clearly unconstitutional police activities in this country.
Americans must say “No” to shariah, and “No” to Interpol.

America's Nuclear Future

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has just issued a license for the first new reactor-driven power plants since Three Mile Island. It’s about time.
The reactors’ design is fundamentally different than the aging ones we rely on today. They are designed to fail-safe. Even in the event the electricity goes off – as it notoriously did in Japan last year – the nuclear core can be cooled and safely shut down.
There are always questions about nuclear power, including its cost and how to dispose of its radioactive waste. With the introduction of a new generation of power plants, however, at least concerns about the safety of this technology can be substantially alleviated.
Having a diversified and modern nuclear component to the nation’s energy portfolio is critical to our national security – and long overdue.

Politics of Unilateral Disarmament

Is unilaterally disarming America good politics? One would think the answer is a no-brainer. But some self-described conservatives seem to think that running to the left of Barack Obama is a responsible national security strategy, sound economically and a winning political platform.
None of these is true. Eviscerating our military only makes destructive and costly wars more likely. The defense spending cuts now in the works will result by some estimates in a million workers losing their high-paying, high-skilled jobs – to say nothing of probably several hundred thousand more who will be forced out of uniform and out of the government workforce.
Fortunately, all three of the Republican presidential candidates who have actually won to date embrace Ronald Reagan’s philosophy of “peace through strength.” The American people deserve – and must accept – nothing less.

Is America Retreating?

Whether we admit it or not, America is seen to be in retreat around the world. The latest symptom is a dramatic reduction in our diplomatic presence in Iraq following the withdrawal of all U.S. forces there. At this rate, we may eventually abandon our hugely expensive new embassy in Baghdad.
This comes as deep cuts in defense spending will mean a free-fall in the United States’ ability to protect its interests and allies. Vacuums of power are developing in strategically sensitive places.
Should we care what happens as a result in far-flung areas like the Mideast, Latin America and Western Pacific? Unfortunately, our perceived weakness emboldens adversaries and can translate into threats to our commerce, people and security. In the past, it has led to war. Pretending otherwise only intensifies our danger.

Understanding Our Most Dangerous Enemy
Tuesday Feb 07, 2012

Five-thousand years ago, Chinese strategist Sun Tsu observed you cannot defeat an enemy you do not know. We have tried to prove otherwise – and failed – at least since 9/11.
Today, Team Obama pretends that we confront something called “violent extremism” – a euphemism that applies equally to Christian fundamentalists, anti-abortion activists, right-wing militias and, well, others. You can destroy your government career noting that, among the others, are Muslims who believe they must engage in holy war, or jihad.
So, it was surprising to hear the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testify last week that we confront “a global jihadist movement,” not just violent extremism. We can only hope that this bit of truth-telling means that we might actually start to understand, and effectively counter, the most dangerous enemy we face at present.

Today is a bittersweet anniversary. It’s Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday and each year the occasion is a source of happy memories tinged with an acute sense of loss.
I had the privilege of working for President Reagan in the Pentagon for over four years and miss him terribly. Endless talk about him on the campaign trail suggests a lot of other people do, too.
Over the holidays, our family made a pilgrimage to the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. to see a wonderful tribute there to our 40th President. His uninhibited love of America and his optimism about its future was so refreshing after three years of Barack Obama’s ambivalence, at best, about both.
You can see the Reagan exhibit through May. If you can’t, be sure to wish the Gipper a happy birthday.
