The State Of Our Union

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
’Tis the season for presidential campaign speeches. And tonight, we’ll hear one from the 2012 Democratic candidate, who happens to be the incumbent.
Barack Obama will likely use his State of the Union address less to provide an honest assessment of the condition of our republic after his three years in office, and more to deliver a pitch to get four more years there.
Don’t expect to hear much, though, about the single most important determinant of the state of our Union: the document that glues it together, our Constitution. Mr. Obama has taken to shredding its blueprint for divided government, with critical checks and balances to safeguard our freedoms.
Presidential overreach threatens our Union. If its state is to be healthy from here on, we must restore the constitutional separation of powers.

Israeli Security, Doing It Their Way!

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Last week, America’s top military man was sent on an urgent diplomatic mission. Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey went to Israel to keep it from trying to destroy Iran’s incipient nuclear weapons capability.
Knowing that General Dempsey is a fan of Frank Sinatra, his hosts treated him to a musical rendition of some of Old Blue Eyes’ hits. The appropriate theme should have been Sinatra’s trademark “My Way.”
After all, the Israelis are confronting an existential threat as Iran crosses one “redline” after another on its way to obtaining the means to do what President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly pledged: to wipe Israel off the map.
America should help Israel put Ahmadenijad and his nuclear program out of business. If President Obama won’t do so, he should get out of Israel’s “way.”

Obama's Unfriendly Fire

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
President Obama’s strategy for withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan is failing. It involves handing off security for the country to Afghan military and police we have been training at a cost of some $11 billion.
The problem is that, in Team Obama’s headlong rush for the Afghan exits, the trainers are finding some students are more willing to shoot them than the Taliban.
As many as fifty NATO troops have been killed this way in the past two years. France is poised to pull out all its troops after four were just murdered by such “unfriendly fire.”
Mr. Obama seems determined to lose Afghanistan. In the process, he is needlessly risking our troops with a strategy that ensures more of them will be killed, not by the enemy, but by their putative friends.

Obama's Triple Play

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
President Obama has blocked construction of the “shovel-ready” Keystone XL pipeline. This amounts to a triple-play against America’s energy security and for her present and prospective enemies.
First, it perpetuates our country’s reliance on energy from easily interrupted overseas sources. Incredibly, Mr. Obama is doing that just as Iran is threatening to block the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Second, the Keystone decision condemns us to the continued transfer of immense national wealth to the OPEC cartel and others deeply hostile to us.
And third, the Canadian oil we could have is likely to go to China – significantly strengthening a nation Mr. Obama says we must pivot our shrinking defenses to counter.
Condemning us to intensifying energy insecurity is a lousy legacy for Barack Obama – and a catastrophe for the rest of us.

Newt Gingrich Speaking On Sharia

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Yesterday, Newt Gingrich was asked whether he would support a Muslim for president. It depends, he said, on whether the candidate was “a modern person who happens to worship Allah” and is not a threat. Or “a person who belonged to any kind of belief in shariah, any kind of effort to impose that on the rest of us” and would be a “mortal threat.”
Newt is absolutely right in making such a distinction. The present danger arises not from the fact that people are Muslim, but from the extent to which they adhere to the totalitarian, supremacist Islamic doctrine of shariah.
We must know our enemies. We must defeat – not accommodate – those who, in the name of shariah, are obliged to wage jihad against us.
And we must keep America shariah-free.

Ron Paul's Questionable Policy

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Libertarian Ron Paul says he is in favor of cutting “military spending,” but not “defense spending.”

He seems to think that he can thread that particular needle by bringing all U.S. forces home from overseas. And Congressman Paul shares President Obama’s belief that we can end wars with those like the Taliban by walking away from them.

Unfortunately, this notion totally misconstrues what motivates the Taliban. Yes, they want their homeland free of foreign occupiers. They are also ideologically committed to the triumph of a supremacist Islamic doctrine called shariah. It requires them to engage in holy war to that end – and to help other jihadists doing the same.

We won’t save any money by surrendering safe havens to our enemies. Anyone who thinks otherwise is unfit to serve as our Commander-in-Chief.
