Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is declaring “red lines” with respect to Iran. He says Iran will not be allowed to get the bomb. He also says they won’t be permitted to interrupt energy flows out of the Persian Gulf.
These red lines are fully justified. Disaster will follow if mullahs who seek to bring back their messiah by triggering the apocalypse get nuclear arms. Ditto closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The trouble is, the Iranians find such warnings as increasingly implausible. Washington is dramatically reducing its military budget and capabilities, retreating from the region and making Asia the new focus of its diminished power projection.
If we don’t want our red lines to turn into green lights for Iran, we going to have to do more than talk about them.

On December 10th, a federal appeals court ruled that the people of Oklahoma could not lawfully amend their state’s constitution to prohibit the totalitarian Islamist doctrine known as shariah. That would seem a setback for the effort to prevent the stealthy insinuation of shariah into our country.
In fact, the court’s ruling may actually prove to be helpful, provided it facilitates enactment of legislation that would achieve in a legally defensible way precisely the same goal. That is, protecting American citizens from any foreign laws whose application in U.S. courts would violate their constitutional rights or state public policy.
Three states have enacted this statute, known as “American Laws for American Courts.” Another twenty may do so in 2012.
It’s time to ensure that only American laws are practiced in American courts.

Gitmo Prison 10 Years Later

Ten years ago today, the United States began using a modest American outpost on the tip of Cuba to house some of the world’s most dangerous jihadists.
Since then, Guantanamo Bay – or Gitmo – has been vilified by Islamists around the world and their many friends on the political Left, here and abroad. So have the brave men and women who incarcerate Gitmo’s detainees at great risk to their reputations and even their lives.
President Obama made directing Gitmo’s closure one of his first official acts. Fortunately, he has been thwarted by Congress from eliminating this vital facility.
Unfortunately, Mr. Obama is still at it. He has been releasing detainees to Saudi Arabia and Yemen and many are back in the fight. He mustn’t be allowed now to do the same for the Taliban.

The Monroe Doctrine Today

In 1823, U.S. President James Monroe declared the Americas off-limits to foreign powers. His successors worked to prevent hostile nations from establishing bases or otherwise penetrating the region that constitutes America’s front yard.
Until recently. Today, another president is in Latin America. He is Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his visit is but the latest example of the trouble now being brewed in the Western hemisphere by his country and others deeply hostile to ours.
Such trouble includes: an Iranian ballistic missile base in Venezuela; Chinese outposts controlling the Panama Canal; and Islamist drug and human trafficking and money laundering, often with local gangs and terrorist groups.
We must renew our commitment to a hemisphere free of such dangerous intrusions – before it is too late to secure our front yard.

Egypt's Peace With Israel
Monday Jan 09, 2012
Monday Jan 09, 2012
This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Will the Islamists now coming to power in Egypt rip up the peace treaty signed in 1979 with Israel? Or will they continue to honor it?
At stake is whether war will erupt threatening the very existence of the Jewish State. That happened again and again until, that is, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat made peace with Israel. As a practical matter, without Egypt, the rest of Israel’s enemies could not hope to prevail.
All of that could change with the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies in Egypt – and much of the rest of the Middle East. Some Brothers say they will keep the deal with Israel. Others seem determined to rip it up. My bet is on the latter, and we best be prepared to contend with its ominous implications.

Obama's Peace Dividend
Friday Jan 06, 2012

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Listening to President Obama unveil his new defense strategy yesterday, I thought, here we go again.
Having basically written off the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Mr. Obama is falling prey to a temptation several of his predecessors found irresistible: Cut defense expenditures. Shrink the military. And hope the rest of the world will neither notice nor take advantage of our weakness.
We shouldn’t kid ourselves. We can walk away from conflicts, but that doesn’t mean they are over. We can hollow out our military but that doesn’t mean that others won’t see it as an invitation to pursue their interests -- at our expense.
In the past, our so-called “peace dividends” have proven illusory. And we paid not just in national treasure but lives. We can’t afford to do that again.
