The Fall of the Euro

Europe has gotten into a world of hurt.  The most important reason seems to be a lack of accountability on the part of lots of people in the 17-country zone that uses a single currency called the Euro. 
The Eurozone nations have become accustomed to unaffordable socialist arrangements, many of them mandated by unelected European Union bureaucrats in Brussels.
Now, the bills of this binge are coming due.  And the leaders of Germany and France are saying that the way to fix the fiscal meltdown in Europe is to consolidate more power in Brussels at the expense of sovereign and democratically elected governments in the EU member states.  
Former UN Ambassador John Bolton has described this crisis as a “democracy deficit.”  Making that deficit worse is unlikely to fix what ails Europe.

The Persecution of Christians

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Christians in the Mideast are becoming the proverbial canaries in the shariah mineshaft.  Their increasingly grim fate is a leading indicator for that region – and for our vital interests, there and beyond. 
In a front-page article today, the Wall Street Journal reports that members of Christian minorities in country after country are being threatened, forced into exile and in some cases murdered simply for practicing their faith.
This situation is sure to worsen in Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt.  Syria and Jordan seem likely to be the next countries to fall under the sway of the totalitarian Islamic doctrine of shariah.  If so, native Christians and refugees will be imperiled there, too.
Instead of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood, the Obama administration should be standing with the freedom-loving Christians oppressed by such virulent Islamists.

Thank You Professor Phillip Karber!

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Hats off to Professor Phillip Karber of Georgetown University.  He and his students have been doing pathbreaking research into Communist China’s so-called “Underground Great Wall.”
Drawing on open and confidential Chinese sources, their research suggests the People’s Liberation Army is not only constructing three thousand miles of hardened tunnels.  The Georgetown team thinks Beijing may be concealing in these complexes vastly more than their arsenal of putatively just several hundred nuclear weapons.
The response here has been hysterical -- not from those who fear a new missile gap with China, but from official and private arms control zealots determined to disarm the United States, unilaterally if necessary. 
Thankfully, Professor Karber’s research reveals how dangerous such policies may be.  President Obama’s denuclearization agenda must be undone before it further imperils our nation’s security.

America's Fiddling

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Legend has it that in Ancient Rome’s declining years, its mad Emperor Nero fiddled as his capital city went up in flames. Today, it seems that a lot of fiddling is going on as official Washington puts America’s defenses to the torch.
Earlier this year, President Obama and Congress agreed to cut nearly half a trillion dollars from the funds our troops need to protect the rest of us.  Now, in a bid to shrink the yawning federal deficit, they put in place what Defense Secretary Leon Panetta calls a “doomsday machine.”
Unless something is done, this so-called “sequestration” mechanism will result in another 600 billion dollars being cut from our defenses over the next decade – with disastrous effects on our security.  Will your representatives stop fiddling and stave off that calamity?

They're Baaack!!

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
They’re baaack.  The mullahs of Iran are back in the business of seizing and pillaging foreign embassies.
In 1979, Ayatollah Khomeini’s so-called “students” stormed our embassy in Tehran, seizing scores of American hostages and humiliating our nation.  Ignoring its responsibility to protect  diplomatic missions, the Iranian regime actually applauded what were, in fact, its agents.
Yesterday, the British embassy in Iran was given the same treatment by more of these irregulars chanting “Death to Britain.”
The next embassy to be sacked by Iranian thugs will probably be America’s newest and most costly – Embassy Baghdad – when Iran fills the vacuum after the U.S. military pulls out of Iraq at year’s end.  If that ignominy is to be avoided, Iran had better, finally pay a real cost for its nasty habit of sacking foreign embassies.

Egyptian Elections

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. 
 
Egypt’s first day of elections should put to rest any lingering illusions about the so-called Arab Spring.
 
For months already the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party and other adherents to Islam’s oppressive Shariah doctrine have been flexing their muscles.  Reports reaching the West give a small taste of what has been happening across Egypt: murders of Coptic Christians, torching of churches, rapes of freedom seeking women, and other forms of political intimidation are bad enough.
 
Now, with elections underway, a reported deal between the Muslim Brotherhood and the military seem s to be translating into electoral manipulation at the polls. A resulting strong Islamist win will be a living nightmare for Egypt, for Israel, and for us.
 
President Obama’s role in enabling this disaster will be one of his most enduring and damning legacies.
