Iranian Nukes

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Last Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann used her appearance at a national security-themed debate to issue an urgent warning:  An Iranian regime perilously close to acquiring nuclear weapons intends to use them to destroy Israel and America.
Could that happen?  The leaders of Iran may think so. 
For years, they have covertly pursued nuclear weapons and obtained ever-longer-range missiles with which to deliver them.  Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has, moreover, repeatedly said that Israel must be wiped off the map – and that a world without America is not only desirable, but achievable.
Iran knows that one or two nuclear weapons would destroy most of Israel.  And a high-altitude nuclear detonation over the United States could unleash an electro-magnetic pulse with catastrophic effects.  Will we act in time to prevent these nightmares?

Egypt's New Democracy?

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Every day brings fresh reminders of that old adage, be careful what you wish for.  Earlier this year, President Obama announced that the United States no longer supported its long-time ally, Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak.
Back in February, Mr. Obama declared that the Mubarak had to go, right away, ostensibly to clear the way for a pro-Western democratic alternative.
Unfortunately, even then, it was apparent that the likely beneficiary of the Egyptian revolution would be the totalitarian, Islamist organization known as the Muslim Brotherhood.  Team Obama should have known that the triumph of shariah-adherent jihadists of the Muslim Brotherhood would be bad for Egypt, bad for its people and bad for our interests.
That prospect is becoming more imminent by the day.  We may reap the whirlwind for President Obama’s wishful thinking.

Happy Thanksgiving

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  There are, of course, all the obvious reasons – the gatherings of family and friends, the shared meals and the other traditions of the season.
But most importantly, it is the moment in the year when, as a nation, we are called to reflect upon our blessings.
Largely free of the commercialization and hype that afflicts most of our other holidays, Thanksgiving is a time for our country simply to come together to reflect, pray and express our gratitude.
My list always starts with thanks for our exceptional nation and for those who ensure we can live here in freedom.  I hope that you feel similarly, and will resolve in the year ahead to help keep ours the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Republican Debate

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
One thing was particularly illuminating about the Republican presidential candidates’ national security debate last night:  The best, most thoughtful and articulate performance of the evening was turned in by…the assorted questioners from the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation.
Unfortunately, the responses left a lot to be desired.  Two of the candidates espouse a demonstrably failed, but seductive, isolationist policy.  The rest mostly served up platitudes that did little to clarify what they would do as Commander-in-Chief if faced with the serious security challenges our country confronts today – and will surely confront tomorrow.
A tip of the hat to Heritage, AEI and CNN for putting the spotlight on the need for leaders who can address the tough national security and foreign policy questions that cannot be finessed, and must not be ignored.

The Supercommittee Failure

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The congressional supercommittee has failed.  So a mechanism Defense Secretary Leon Panetta calls the “doomsday machine” has been unleashed.  It will wreak havoc on the national security of the United States by cutting another 600 billion dollars from the defense budget.  Worse yet, these reductions come on top of the nearly half-a-trillion dollars in cuts the Pentagon is already struggling to absorb. 
That means fewer forces in fewer places around the globe capable of defending our people and interests.  They will be equipped with obsolescing weapons that may prove inferior to those of their enemies, or inadequate to their missions.  We will lose lives unnecessarily – probably of both our troops and our citizens at home.
Eighty-two percent of Americans told pollsters recently that they oppose further defense spending cuts.  So should our leaders.

Attorney General Holder Needs To Step Down

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
There could scarcely be a greater contrast between Attorney General Eric Holder and his predecessor, Judge Michael Mukasey, President George W. Bush’s last AG.
Lately, calls have been mounting for Holder’s resignation over the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal.  Far more worrisome, he has populated the Justice Department with radical leftists, including lawyers sympathetic to the terrorists detained at Guantanamo Bay. 
Worse yet, Holder has bent every effort to excuse, ignore and enable the threat posed by the Muslim Brotherhood here in the United States.
By contrast, in a Veterans Day speech before the esteemed Federalist Society, Judge Mukasey rendered his latest outstanding public service.  He starkly illuminated that threatening “civilization jihad” – a determined effort to destroy this country from within. 
America needs an Attorney General like Michael Mukasey, now, more than ever.
