Go Big!

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
“Go Big!”  That’s the new demand of 100 legislators in Washington.
They want $4 trillion in federal deficit reduction – more than three times the amount that has, thus far, eluded the so-called Deficit Reduction Super Committee.  Its members disagree whether to achieve even relatively small savings by raising taxes or just by cutting spending.
Exactly how the “Go Big” folks propose to get there from here is not clear. What is clear, however is that – whatever the target – the United States seems poised to make draconian cuts in our capabilities to provide for the common defense, the first responsibility of our federal government. 
If we do so, we will find ourselves going big, all right – going into big trouble by inviting aggression in a dangerous world.  We literally cannot afford to do that.

Happy Birthday ANZUS

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Happy Anniversary, ANZUS!  It’s the 60th birthday of the Australia-New Zealand-US alliance, better known as ANZUS.
This team proved to be a bulwark against Soviet ambitions in the Cold War.  It survived strains caused by anti-nuclear fervor in New Zealand jeopardizing our naval deployments there.    
Arguably, ANZUS has never been more important than now as the three English-speaking Pacific democracies confront an increasingly aggressive and hegemonic China.
So those who love freedom should welcome today’s announcement by President Obama and his Australian counterpart that they have agreed to base up to 2500 U.S. Marines and conduct increased joint air operations on the Aussies’ north coast.  
Let’s hope this upgrading of our common defenses will assure that ANZUS – and the Free World more generally – will have much to celebrate for decades to come.

America Stands For Religious Freedom

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Religious freedom.  Those two words are central to our Constitution and the exceptional America it has made possible.
Unfortunately, in many other countries no such freedom exists for faiths other than that practiced by the majority.  This is especially true of nations where the totalitarian Islamic doctrine of shariah is the law of the land.  In such places, even being a member of minority communities like Christians or Jews can get you killed.
America needs to monitor and oppose such practices.  That job has been performed for years by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. Yet, one Senator, Dick Durban of Illinois, is  trying to terminate this commission – as soon as this weekend. 
America needs to continue to stand up for religious freedom.  Sen. Durban must not keep it from doing so.

Obama's Pacific Pledge

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
Suddenly, it seems, President Obama is all about the Pacific.  A weekend summit of the region’s leaders served as the backdrop for what appear to be impressive new U.S. undertakings to remain a Pacific power – both economically and militarily.
On the economic front, Mr. Obama agreed to the outlines of a new multilateral trade deal.  With respect to the military side, his administration says it is going to ramp up dramatically its ability to counter Chinese power projection in the region.  That will include a new US base in Australia.
This sounds good – and is needed in light of China’s increasing strength and aggressiveness. 
But will it amount to very much?  Not unless our Nation truly appreciates the danger China poses – and undertakes the concerted and sustained effort necessary to counter it.

Buying Military Technology From China?

Earlier this week a Senate committee revealed that the Pentagon has brought over a million counterfeit and defective parts, many from Communist China.
Some have actually been put into the U.S. militaries weapons systems. As a result our armed forces may not be able to perform their missions. We may even needlessly lose servicemen and women thanks to faulty weapons components made in China.
These reports prompted congressional and public outrage that the Chinese have gone beyond selling American consumers tainted baby formula, exploding batteries and toxic drywall, but where’s the outrage that our defense industrial base is now so debilitated, so diminished and dependent upon China that we are actually relying on the Chinese to sell us gear we may need to defend ourselves against them.
That’s not just outrageous, it’s crazy.

Iran's Last Chance

This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute.
The fat is now in the fire.  Even the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency acknowledges that the mullahs of Iran have a dedicated, if still secret, military component to their nuclear energy program.  For years, the IAEA made excuses for the Iranians and concealed what it knew.
As a result, we have squandered precious time and evidence that could have been used to stop the regime’s weapons program.  Clearly the time has come for action.  There is ample reason to believe that if the messianic Iranian leaders get the bomb, they will use it, assuredly against Israel, perhaps against us.
Diplomatic engagement hasn’t ended this threat neither have economic sanctions, the two options President Obama has favored.
We have no choice now but to use preemptive military force.  Will we do so?
