A Victory for Freedom in South Korea
In a world in which tyranny is on the march from Ukraine to China to Latin America, there was an important victory for freedom yesterday. The people of South Korea rejected the presidential candidacy of a pro-North Korea, anti-America Communist.
Instead, they elected his conservative opponent, Yoon Suk Yeol, who has pledged to strengthen his country’s alliance with the United States, rebuild its ties with Japan and enhance its defenses against growing threats from North Korea and China.
The question occurs: Will the lame-duck leftist President Moon Jae-in use his remaining weeks in office to redouble his policy of appeasing North Korea that has been formally repudiated by the electorate? Not only would such a gambit be at odds with popular sentiment. It could embolden tyrants in Pyongyang and Beijing to take advantage of the transition to advance their territorial ambitions.
