Suddenly, the demands for a special counsel to investigate allegations of Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election have been satisfied. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein yesterday appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to take on that assuredly thankless task.
It may also prove to be an exercise in futility, given the acknowledged absence to date of evidence to support the claims that Donald Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia.
Worse yet, Mr. Muller’s assignment seems to preclude pursuit of what there is plenty of evidence to investigate. Namely, the myriad instances in which Democratic political figures actually did collude with the Kremlin to interfere with American elections and or to advance corrupt purposes.
We can only hope that justice will be served by Robert Muller’s inquiry, even if the probe’s limited scope will allow many to dodge that bullet.
